In addition to the dry wood. The hotter the fire the less smoke. DA

KNow why it's smoking and remove that factor. (I assume you mean excessive smoking, because fire makes smoke, that's just the way it works)

Camp fires can smoke because the wood is to "green" (to fresh cut, hasn't been allowed to dry). Also leaves and other light-weight material will smoke because they're so light-weight that they don't sit in the fire long enough to burn up completely before being lifted in the rising heat.

Also any oils will smoke as will many chemicals. So that means paints, glues, finishes (polyeurethane, stains, waterproofing etc). If you burn an old bookcase it's probably going to smoke a lot as the stain will smoke and cheaper materials are chip/fibre board or plywood which are small pieces of wood glued together.

Want a fairly smoke free fire (within reason)? Use good, well aged wood that has NOT been processed (used to make something else).

If you're trying to stop an "extinguished" fire from smoldering your best bet is water. Burrying it in dirt will work but you could still have hot coals banked under the dirt that can cause a rekindling of the fire after you've left. Just douse it with lots of water until the ashes are all soaked and become a nice muddy mess.

Use very dry wood.
Build your fire from sticks as thick as your finger (seriously).
Keep it small so you don't need large amounts of wood, because those small ones burn faster, of course. Think as large as two hands.
Preferably you can build a reflector of wood; this will reflect the heat back into the fire so it burns better; and the wood you use for the reflector dries out before you burn it.

If you want to build a huge campfire that can be seen from the international space station (also known as 'White man's fire'), go ahead, throw half the forest on your fire and sit in the corner where the smoke doesn't go.

A campfire will smoke. It does so because the smoke comes from the physical reaction of changing wood to carbon. However, the smoke can be minimized by pouring water, sand, and/or dirt over the fire.

You can also minimize the presence of smoke by burning very dry wood. Wet or green wood brings out more smoke.

Use wood that is very dry and not too pitchy (pine is very pitchy and can be used as a starter but has a lot of residue). Make sure there is not moisture in the wood. You want a hot fire with plenty of air movement through so as to make a more complete combustion of the fuel.
Think of a teepee approach to stacking the fuel - the attached website has pictures...Enjoy

Almost impossible to do, as wood burns it smokes from unlit gasses as more of the wood heats up to the point of combustion causing flame! Gonna be a lil smoke where there's fire!
And use dry seasoned wood as said by others!

make sure the wood you are using is as dry as possible and that your fire is burning very hot. this will prevent wet wood and dirt from smouldering and giving off smoke.
wood is a near smokeless fuel but bark, dirt, leaves and water add up to sore eyes and a bad taste.
