Cats are blessed with a far superior inner-ear that enables them to almost always land on their feet. Yet there are those occasions where the fall is either too short or too far and they can't get onto their feet on time or because of the type of fall. A cat's sense of equilibrium is astounding and makes me jealous to be quite honest!

An amazing joint system in their back allows them to usually land on their feet.
In my younger days some friends and I held a cat and dropped it 5 times while recording. Watching it in slow-mo is amazing! It spins and twists so it can land feet down as long as it has about 2 feet to fall. Anything less and it just plops down and gets very angry.
(I would never do such a thing now, but it was very informative)

That's not always true. I have a very clumsy kitty that falls off everything and not always on her feet. Afterward she will look at me as if to say "I meant to do that"!

They don't always, listen carefully: My cat fell from my living room chair two days ago. He landed hard on his neck, was paralyzed and died about 2-minutes later from asphyxiation. I am totally heart-broken. Please, please be careful with your kitties!
