Mormons follow the teachings of Joseph Smith and his various successors.

In the past, Mormons taught that polygamy was necessary to be saved with Christ. They taught that Christ had three wives and many children.

Today, they have renounced this doctrine, along with the doctrine that blacks are inferior, due to the legal pressure that the Church has received.

They have secret Temple rituals where people have to swear allegiance (and even give their lives if necessary) to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "for the building up of the kingdom of God". In the past, they swore death penalty oaths that they would have to suffer if they revealed the nature of the secret rituals. These were also changed. (in 1990)

Before 1904, temple mormons had to swear an oath of vengeance against the government of the United States to avenge the blood of Joseph Smith, who was murdered with permission from a local official in illinois.

The Church today teaches a lot of good things and has come much closer to mainstream Christianity (by abandoning polygamy, blood atonement, racism, and other hurtful doctrines) and actually does a lot of good in the world. Their doctrine and history, however, are far from Christ-like. The Church itself has a net value of over $30 billion and annual revenues of over $6 billion. It is a well-run business that accomplishes a lot of good but also teaches wrong things to a lot of people.

Mormons themselves are usually very good people. Very honest and trustworthy, and try their best to live Christ's and Joseph Smith's teachings.

Mormons are a religious cult that was started by a liar, Joseph Smith of New York. Supposedly he was visited by the Angel Moroni and give scrolls pertaining to true Christianity, No one has ever seen the scrolls. They don't necessarily follow the Bible. They have their own Book of Mormon. At onetime they believed in polygamy. that was because as they traveled out west the men were killed off by Indian raids, Hence Brigham Young had a vision it was alright to have more than one wife.
In the book Kingdom of the Cults they are the first cult listed.

Mormons refer to a wide variety of groups of people who read and believe in the teachings of the Book of Mormon.

Two of the largest groups of Mormons include the Community of Christ, as well as Latter-day Saints. We believe in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. We all read from the same Holy Bible as Christians do.

Latter-Day Saints scriptures include:
The Holy Bible (KJV 1611 seems prevalent)
The Book of Mormon.
The Doctrine and Covenants
The Pearl of Great Price

The mormon church was founded by Joesph Smith 1830 in Parmyra, New York. He wrote a book called Book of Mormon. He said he got the gold plates from angel Moroni. Translated the plates from the power of god. But according to Martin Harris one of the witness of the book of mormon. he used the seer stone to translate the Book of Mormon.
The church is leading their members from the truth About Jesus Christ.

What answer do you seek? Serious? Biographical? Short? Long?

Short answer - They are a pseudo-Christian cult known as the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints. They were kicked out of just about everywhere until they found Salt Lake City, Utah. They believe in very strong family values, ~formerly~ believed in polygamy (one man, multiple wives...belief stopped a century ago), and believe that if they are good and pious enough, they will eventually become gods of their own planets (this is one of the things that makes them non-Christian).

Mormon is just a nickname for a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It's also sometimes used to refer to some small, radical offshoot group, which is why most members of the main church prefer to be called LDS for short to offer that distinction.

If you want to know our basic beliefs, I would start here at the official church website: http://www.mormon.org/welcome/0,6929,403-1,00.html

Thanks

I am LDS. I believe in the Christ and in his atonement for our sins, so we can repent of our sins every time we fall. I believe that God has sent us here on earth for a reason. That reason is so that we can obtain bodies and to be tested. Through these tests we learn and grow. Christ is there to help us as we pray and believe in him. After we die, our bodies and spirits are separated for a time, but they are reunited through the resurrection. After we are resurrected we will be judged and granted the glory and blessings that we have earned.

God's full truth has existed on this earth before. It was restored in our time through Joseph Smith who was directed by God. He translated the Book of Mormon by the power of God. The priesthood has also been restored and is now passed on by authority and worthiness. We are baptized by this priesthood, and we receive Christ's other ordinances by the priesthood. God has continued to call prophets from the time of Joseph Smith until our day. The current prophet is Gordon B. Hinckley. To find out about our official beliefs please go to mormon.org and lds.org. There is a lot of misinformation out there, but these sources are 'straight from the horses mouth', if you will and are the pure beliefs that we hold.

Just don't open your door to the young men who ask you "what do you know about the Mormon Church and would you like to know more?"
