I ask this quite seriously and not to put anyone down.
My work and social life constantly bring me into contact with people from many religions.
I can't help notice that "born again Christians" and Baptists are the least tolerant of the faiths and beliefs of other people. I could understand it if they just didn't like other religions but they don't even like other Christians. Why should this be?

Most people who think they have *ALL* the answers and that their way is the right way and only way are pretty full of themselves.

Some thing like ex smokers I think. They are also intolerant.
As for 'born again' Christians they have previously 'lapsed' for whatever reason, then 'seen the light' again.
They have realised they have been living in darkness, now it's all clear to them, they see among them Christians that are not 'real' Christians and so on...........
I am not religious at all, I don't believe in God (Oh shock horror)!! I have always been very interested in religion , all religions, and was very surprised to discover that Christians are the most intolerant of the lot.
I don't expect any religion to understand what their particular brand is all about, but I have found that the Christians know less about their religion than any other group I have read about, strange that don't you think?
The main thing they cant explain is the Holy Trinity bit! Ask a Muslim about the Koran or any other religion about their brand, they have a far better understanding of their religion than these Christians do about their own!
But your question was 'why should this be'? All I can think of is that perhaps they are trying to make up for lost time?

I feel the same. They imply that there is something wrong with my faith if I don't speak in tongues or say literally that I accept Jesus as my personal Saviour. Then and only then will I be saved. Jesus is the personal Saviour of all who believe in him , he has Redeemed us all and if we want to be saved, then we must take up our cross daily and follow him. Salvation has to be earned. The phrase 'Born Again' was coined by an American Evangelical in around 1800 or so. Many do not like the mainstream churches. That's what I have found as I have some friends who are 'born Again' Christians.

I am a born-again Christian and I find this question to be very legitamate, one that should be asked. That is NOT the way it should be, not because I say so, but because Jesus says so. One of our focuses in our church is to NOT be religious. Our focus is on love, acceptance, and believing that God will change people in His way and His timing. I believe that, which is why I am there.

Now, as a Christian am I always tolerant, patient, etc. NO!!! I am still totally human! That's the thing people don't understand. God has and is changing me, but it's a process. But when I do act these ways, God lets me know it's a problem...as long as I am choosing to listen to God. Sometimes we go off on our own paths. Christianity is not a stamp of perfection. But Christ is bringing me into that, and one day maybe........

They have grossly misunderstood the term "born again". There is no such thing as a Christian who has not been born agian, it is what happens inside of one when they allow Jesus to come in and begin to change them. It is just very sad that these folks have chosen this label to apply to themselves. It is quite misleading.
Personally, I think there is an unholy spirit at work among the denominations...and I think it is this spirit that is responsible for the phenomena that keep cropping up among these people...such as being "slain in the spirit" "Holy laughter" "drunk in the sprit" and such like. No matter how hard you look, you cannot find any such nonsense as this in the Bible. Jesus does not slay people in the spirit...He raises them to new life in the spirit!! These are very gullable people who are easily led...and don't even know the voice they are following......

"Born again Christians" are not even NEAR the least tolerant religious people. They may be the most narrow-minded, but they don't (currently, if they are truly Christians) kill people of other religions because they believe differently.

If you had a cure for cancer, and knew there were people out there that "claimed" to have a cure, but their cure only brought death, wouldn't you say something? Wouldn't you try to stop it?

I know a few Baptists: - they are on Prescription Anti-psychotics and Lithium - they believe they can save the world, they have run up debts on their credit cards giving money they do not have to the God channel.

They are frightened because they have been led astray by the lies of their religion.

Remember Jesus was not Christ his father is.

Without wishing to sound cynical I believe that it's because they have a lot of years of misbehaving to make up for. All the born again Christians I know seem absolutely desperate to make up for past sins and reserve themselves a place in heaven, so this makes them more intense.

Okay, maybe it was a bit cynical and maybe it doesn't apply to all of them.

For me personally, I just don't like people in general.

Seriously, it is sad. I'm 'born again', and know there are flawed people out there - I'm one. But there are plenty of good 'born again' folks as well.

Christians are the most tolerant people. They have to be.
