I have been quite depressed for a long time, almost a decade, and something sad has happened. It's nothing horribly terrible, mind you, but my boyfriend of 2.5 years broke up with me a couple of days ago and it definitely does not help my ambition, drive, or sanity. I know it's only been a couple of days, but that's why I premised this saying I have depressed for too long.

The time has come to get rid of this ridiculous laxidazical attitude and move on to something (and someone [ that someone being myself]) better!

Please just talk to a local pharmacist, if you need a script make an appointment with a family doctor. This would be a great time to go have a make over. Set an appointment to have your hair done, get a facial, go shopping and update your clothes, declare your a new woman to the world, get out more, if you have close friends make arrangements to go out more, go ahead try flirting with a few guys. You should enjoy every part of your life. Try being liberated and free for now. Break away from feeling dependent on a boy friend. Nothing attracts guys faster than a woman who does not need a man to be happy. Visaversa for guys reading this... Limit the down time where you just sit around and think about your past, spend more time planning your future. Have Fun,, Ken in Kansas City, write if you want, never to many friends...

First, in order to get any form of anti-depressant you have to go through your doc (or ER if severe enough). DO NOT try to get things on-line or mail order or anything like that without having a dr. prescibe it, it can be very dangerous. Plus if you have been depressed for that long then you may not have just simple depression, it may be something more like Bipolar Disorder (used to be called manic depression) taking antidepressants are only going to make you worse.

Second, I would beware of St. Johns Wart. If you have some conditions it can interfere and make them worse. I would read the label and research it before you start taking it.

Your safest bet is to go to your dr., explain your feelings and let him/her help you. If that dr wont listen then go to another.

Oh and if they prescribe something you can go to Walmart and get it in generic form pretty cheap.

You may want to try St. John's Wart, it's a natural herb and I know some people that swear by it. Also, I'm not sure if you have insurance or not, but there are several anti-depressants that are now available in generic (Paxil for example).

I hope you feel better soon honey, I've been where you are.

Gentle hugs, Lynn

You may want to look into Saint John's Wort. This plant is so effective, it is prescribed as medicine in Europe. In the USA it is sold as a nutitional supplement. Make sure you consider any potential interactions with other medications.

first of all, i just want to say that you are doing the very best thing you can for yourself (getting help). i have been clinically depressed since being an infant...of course at the time they didn't know what it was...all they knew is that i wouldn't eat, etc.

i lived for most of my life thinking that it was me. that there was something wrong with me. that i had to force myself to be like everyone else. to make myself seem happy on the outside in order to (fool) everyone else...

of course, keeping in mind what most of society thinks about people with mental illness and the stigma that is associated with taking meds. i of course knew that i was not 'crazy' but if i said something, i felt that that is how people would see me.

in my mid twenties i made up my mind that enough was enough and the truth was, screw everyone else...i was tired of figting myself everyday to do the most basic things...everything takes this monumental effort to accomplish...anyway...i share that to say this...go get help...don't go to any internet site that will mail you something that you don't know how it will work on your body, that you don't know if it even is what you order, that you don't know if it contains somenthing that will harm you.

if you have a primary care physician, go to him/her...i spoke to my primary about it, and the fact that i was ready to help myself...normally clinics have either one behavioral health person on site, or they are associated with one. they will be able to have you talk with that person and have them give you an un-official evaluation. from there, they should ask you if you are willing to see a psychiatrist.

don't let that word set you into panic..the psychiatrist is only the person that is officially trained to prescribe you the meds that will be best for you. that person will work along with you, and they will monitor the medication and how it's working with you, if it's too much, or not enough, if you can't tolerate certain meds they will find other meds that will accomodate your needs. keep in mind that this person may come off as very distant and not too relatable to you or your feelings...that is because they only deal with treating the symptoms (nothing else)

they will then ask you if you have a therapist/psycologist. this is the person that you will need to sit down and talk about your feelings and how to move on from here into a new way of living and thinking...

you have to do both if you really want to make your life the best that it can be. some people onlyneed medication to get over a little hump of depression...some people don't need meds, but they are able to get over it by talking to a professional...then there are those like me, who have to live with this for the rest of our lives..it's not as bad as it sounds, as long as you are fully informed and committed to fixing yourself...

i don't want to impose on anyones beliefs, but i see that many people have recommended st. johns to you, this may help, but based on what you have explained so far, your problem is not temporary...

all we can give you is our best advise...i hope this helps, i really hope that you trully know (you may not believe it right now) but there is a great light at the end...

If u see your doctor, he's going to give you anti-depressive pills
that are supposed to help within 1 to 6 weeks
but if u are depressive for that long as you say, i don't think it's gonna help. You could only develop addiction and that would be a very, very bad thing for you.

I suggest that you somehow help yourself like.

i don't know how. I am in a very ****** position myself and when i think about it i get very depressive and than i drink couple of bottles of whiskey...

but if i don't think, everything is oke

find something that can amuse you
live your life. go out, meet people, and
everything z gonna b allright :)

good luck

p.s. marijuana (cannabis)

I would recommend a trip to Mexico the pharmacies down there are much cheaper and the ones on the border all speak english. I went down there many times to stock up for my mother when she was alive.

Very simple. Go to your doctor and ask for a prescription antidepressant. No one can suggest a "good" one for you because everyone reacts differently to them. You have to find what works for you.
And they only way to get them, is with a doctor's prescription. You don't have to suffer like this. Call and make an appointment....now.
