I am not surprised by some of the answers here, but wish people could learn to show some respect for others and their beliefs. To come on a question and put answers you know won't be helpful and may be downright rude or insulting... not very nice and lacks respect for people in general. Your question... true characteristics of a true Christian... you will find many see this in different ways. From what I understand.. a true Christian is kind, caring, tries his/her best to follow the word of the Bible and God's ways. WWJD... that is what a contact posted on a question I also answered today. If you can do your best to follow what Jesus would do, not have hate in your heart, etc... you may be at least close to being a true Christian. Accept Jesus and follow his ways... you are even closer. It takes a lot more than picking apart each others religions and proving yours is better.

The mark of a true Christian is love for others and obedience to God’s Word (1 John 2:4; 1 John 2:10).

Being a follower of the example Jesus set for us. 1 Peter 2:21 tells us - "In fact, to this course you were called, because even Christ suffered for you, leaving you a model for you to follow his steps closely." (Compare John 13:15)

One must do this out of faith, according to John 3:16.

One must also base their beliefs and teachings upon the written Word of God, the Bible. - 2 Timothy 3:16, 17.

This is because it is in the Bible that we learn about Jesus Christ and Jehovah God, which will help us on the road to everlasting life. - John 17:3.

We would also be telling others the Good News of God's Kingdom. - Matthew 24:14; 28:19, 20.

LOVE:
For our enemies - Matthew 5:44
For our neighbors - Matthew 22:39
For Jehovah - Matthew 22:39

BUT the most distinctive characteristic of a true Christian is the self sacrificing love they have for one another.

"I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.” - John 13:34, 35.

"This is my commandment, that you love one another just as I have loved you. No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his soul in behalf of his friends." - John 15:12, 13.

Jesus answered this one. "By this all will know that YOU are my disciples, if YOU have love among yourselves."

True Christians were also given a commission. Matthew 28:19, 20 says, "Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU."

True Christians would be known for their love and their preaching work. Not a set of man-made doctrines, but adherence to the Bible as their authority.

I think that you have to go to the root of being Christian to understand the answer to that.

A Christian is a Christian because they trust God through Jesus Christ. they can have any sort of behavioral problems, and all too often do. But the Christian thing is to trust God through Jesus Christ.

Obedience to the bible. Following its rules and laws (ie, stoning unruly children, rape victims who remain silent).

This means ignoring contradictions within reality. The problem people have with Islam is not what it says, it's the fact that the followers actually believe and follow what it says.

When we don't judge others on what they do and what their culture is. When we cross boundaries of society with compassion, respect, justice, and commitment. All for the ultimate good.
