becuz i noticed that i have been converting movies i download but i didnt have to when i had nero on windows xp (i have ubuntu now)

Nero did the conversion as part of the burning process if you select "Video DVD" when creating a project.

Dear Brother,
Whenever you write a CD with the Nero(Latest) with the CD type as Video CD,

It will convert your videos to *.DAT extention filetype, which is easily playable on a DVD ,
well a normal DVD will play most of the Video Formates, like *.mpg, *.dat, *.vob, *.avi etc

Furthermore if you want to convert your *.DAT to MPEG, then you can easily do it with Ulead Video Editing software,or another very useful Software Called
VCD Cutter Version 4.1, which is easily available and easy to use. Very much user friendly
