While you bring up an excellent point, many know that in christianity things are used and ignored at will. If it doesn't fit the agenda it is ignored.

People worshipped many other idols as gods from the golden calf to the litany of Egyptian gods during the time of the 10 Commandments. Today, anything you place a higher value on than your relationship with Him would be a "god" in your life.

The Bible speaks symbolically about anything that may be idolized and/or "put on a pedestal" in place of the one and only true God of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. By worshiping false Idols such as gold, silver, sexual indulgences, or even a mere human being and man-made objects of desire, takes away our focus and true worship in the true Spirit of God our creator, who is the only one counted worthy of true worship. Those are the superficial things of the world that are worshiped by men who are apart from God who still walk in darkness, and who's evil deeds may be exposed by the light of the truth. It just doesn't have to be another "unseen" false god from mythical folklore, or from some other pagan cult or religion to be understood of what God's Commandments are referring to, if you understand the Word of God and His perfect plan for mankind. Satan is the god of this age and will do anything to keep mankind from the light of the truth. He will mess with peoples minds with subtle messages of deceit, envy, pride, greed and hate for our fellow man. Satan is the arch advisary of God and much smarter more powerful that a human. Your only defence against the poison darts of Satan is to seek the TRUE God of the Bible through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

Throughout the Bible there are so many indications that it was written indicating they believed in divine pluralism (polytheism). The Book of Daniel 11:36 clearly states that "And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, ..." The God of gods, indicating more than one.
In the Old Testament in the original Hebrew, there is the use of the word "Elohim" when referring to "God" throughout. However "Elohim" is the plural of the Hebrew word for God "Eloah". Hence the original text of the bible uses the word Gods, not God.
Genesis 1:26 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:...", hence another reference to multiple Gods.
The bible is rampant indicating that there is more than one God that they believed in, however, the Christian church realized (with help) that it was more financially beneficial to have only one God and all the money come to them, than multiple Gods and the money spread out. Religion is big business and always has been. They have just been refining their product over thousands of years to one that is easily digestible for the masses.

When people say there is only one God, they usually mean they believe that there is only one true God (as in a monotheistic God) e.g Yahweh .Yes there are many gods and goddess and the bible mentions these (e.g Baal) so there is no contradiction, but in there God through prophets, prophetesses, kings and queens, calls the people back to worship the true God of their ancestors. Finally, anything can be a god (or goddess if you will) e.g money if you 'worship' that instead.

"Jehovah" is his name...He is the "Only True God". He is the Sovereign of the Universe. He is from everlasting to everlasting.
He is called the Most High over all the earth. He is the Creator and Our Father.
The God of Moses, Jacob, Abel, Solomon, David, Job.
There are man made gods that people have made and worship. These gods Jehovah hates. He created us and wants exclusive devotion.
Just as when a man has a son he wants his son to love him because he caused his birth and then raised him. But if the child grows up and makes another man his father turning away from his true father...it hurts the true father...then it makes him angry.
God is God...and we should make sure our worship is only to Him.

Note this tiny but great difference.
God - gods
There is only one God. His first commandment goes something like this, "I am the Lord, Your God. You shall not have any other gods before me."
The "gods" here refer to "false gods" (as others may coin). These are the idols and the like.
That's why we should not "idolize". Instead, we should "lionize". They mean pretty much the same thing. You appreciate someone/something greatly. "Lionize" is a better term to use.

Sheesh - its terribly annoying to see all sorts of people agree with this point without having actually read the Bible.
The Bible frequently refers to gods. The Israelites believe in the One and True God, but were surrounded by cultures who believed in other "gods." Thus, God was telling the Israelites to not have any of these false gods before Him...something that they do over and over again throughout their history.
Edit: By the way, today we can interpret that in our personal lives to mean the idols WE worship - instead of Baal or Ashtoreth, it can refer to TV or money. But in context, it was referring to the "gods" of the surrounding cultures.

because people now and even back then turn any little thing into their God now. They don't want to accept the fact that their is truly only one God. and that he created all you see around you. it's easier for them to believe some scientist explanation saying we originated from apes. and that the big bang theory actually created the earth. they don't want to take responsibilities for their own actions. and i think they are afraid of what happens to those that die sinning.

During Exodus, idol worship -- praying to a statue -- was big. Now it's refering to pagan gods, like Wiccan, Hindu... and also, if something is more important to you than God, then that is idol worship in God's eyes

Because He knows man, He created us and He knows that we have a tendency of making many things our gods. Money, power, drugs, relationships, etc. Anything that we put first before God is another god to God. Football, Baseball, Golf, etc. Man has a tendency to worship many things.
