Definitely consider walmart.
Another idea is to buy trays. Either a wedding cake stand that has the metal layers already built in the stand or seperate wedding cake stands. Those are very popular now.

then you only have to get round cakes to set on the stand yourself--much cheaper!
If you get ones like those--a baker doesn't actually have to be good at balancing the tiers. Then you could just have a friend make regular cakes for you and put them on the stand.
Also look for dessert bakers. My baker was a mediterranean dessert maker--did a lot of conferences and bar mitzvahs. Well she was just starting in the wedding cake business and therefore was a lot cheaper and willing to do something different.
Most charged more for each layer if you wanted different flavors but since this was one of her firsts (and the first time doing my flavors) she did a coconut layer (with mango puree in the middle), a vanilla layer with pineapple and an almond layer with chocolate ganache--all for the same price as if we had just picked one flavor with one filling.
200 people is a lot. Some bakeries have fake cakes that she has made to demonstrate what she can do. So she'd have 2 foam layers spray painted and the top layer of the cake real, which would be the one you cut at the wedding. Then use sheet cake for the guests. You could get 2 large sheet cakes for around $100.
Hope these ideas work for you. Good luck!
(and as far as where can you get dessert for less than 2.00 a person-- mine was 1.50 a person and it was 3 tiered cake. I'll show you pictures if you want)

Depending on your budget, you might want to consider Costco. Their cakes are really good. While I haven't seen one of their wedding cakes, we have used them for several special occasion cakes and they were beautiful and great tasting.
If you have a little wiggle room in your budget, you might want to consider Cakes and Creations. It's a professional, yet home-based company owned by two sisters (one bakes the cakes, the other does the decorations). Our cake was beautiful and tasted delicious. It was a little over $300 (for over 100 guests), but the price included a gorgeous multi-tier display, flowers, cake fountain, set-up and delivery. They also provide a free mini anniversary cake for each couple. There website is http://www.cakesandcreations.com/
Another option is to buy a small fancy cake for your cake cutting ceremony and have your guests served from sheet cakes cut and plated in the kitchen. This way you can use just about any bakery and that costs will still be affordable.

You can get decent and goodlooking wedding cakes at walmart. Honestly! A 200 ppl cake will be around 250 dollars. I don't think no home baker can top that unless you want sheet cake.
Good luck

Why not have a very small "fancy" wedding cake for you and your betrothed to cut, then serve a sheet cake to the guests. :) You could also do the cupcake wedding cake thing. :)
Try putting a "wanted" advert on Craigslist (it's free and lasts for 45 days).
Good luck and best wishes! :)

For a 200 serving cake, you should expect to pay at least 400.00. Where else are you going to get dessert for less than 2.00 a person?
Check with your local chamber of commerce for at home bakers if that is the route you choose; you can ask wedding vendors like florists and caterers for recommendations also. Don't expect them to be cheap just because they work from home; if anything their quality will be just as good as any bakery can give you.
