Nope, the whole point of the SSN is identifying you for Social Security and taxes. You have to use that number for that purpose, not another.

They won't give you an ITIN

The real problem is, everybody ELSE wants to use your SSN because they view it as a number which is unique, secret, and identifies a citizen. All of which is false. Two people can legitimately have the same SSN, and you know how secret it isn't :(

Anyway, they want to use it for trivial reasons which don't relate to reporting to the IRS. No way; tell them to stick it! Utility companies always demand your SSN but cannot deny you service if you refuse (they want it to run your credit report so they can tell if you're creditworthy; otherwise they may want a deposit up front.)

For many years hospitals used your SSN as a universal medical record ID, but the industry is starting to stop that. Many hospitals still ask, and after I refused, one admitting nurse cloyingly asked "Not even for this??" Beg pardon!

Don't just give out a fake number,

especially if there's any chance of someone accusing you of fraud. Although the numbering system has holes; there are some numbers which are "impossible" and will never be allocated to a real person. And then there was the wallet manufacturer who included "fake" cards for display purposes...

No, if an individual is eligible for a SSN then you can not apply for a ITIN. An entity such as a corporation or LLC can obtain an EIN but individuals who have an SSN must use the SSN.

it incredibly is as much as you. I used a tax identity variety as quickly as I did contract artwork because of the fact i did no longer want different companies to have get entry to to my inner maximum social protection variety. identification robbery hadn't yet substitute into nationwide information, yet my pal already were a sufferer of it. some human beings use a tax identity variety rather of social protection to chop up their business enterprise from their own, as while it comes to a sole proprietorship.
