Hello! Stability balls are great alternatives to weight benches, in that they challenge stabilizing muscles that assist with balance and stability in any given space. Many people don't know that you can also do cardio with a stability ball. Do you enjoy floor aerobics? If you do, try doing just ten minutes of aerobic exercise (not on a machine, but on the floor, like hamstring curls, knee lifts, etc.) with a stability ball in your hands. I always cue my class participants by saying, 'Pretend you have a pin on your knee, and every time your knee lifts, you bring the ball down and try to burst it.' Give it a try. It will wear you out. I have a stability ball and I love it. It will really help tone your body and increase your balance. Just about every exercise you do on the ball also works your core muscles. I recently read an article on the stability ball and it was named number 1 in exercise equipment. There is no need to spend a ton of money on all the different gadgets that come out. You can purchase a ball for $15-30 and see way more results than you would with other $100+ pieces of equipment. Besides that you can work every muscle group with the ball and don't need to buy separate things for legs, arms and abs.

I can't imagine any way of getting your heart rate high enough long enough with a stability ball to have any impact on weight loss.
That not to say its worthless. Its certainly a great way to work on strength, balance, and flexibility. It just isn't going to do much in the way of burning calories.

Note to truth: I suggest you verify your thought with a heart rate monitor. A lot of things that seem like they'd be good cardio, really aren't when you measure them.
Example: I thought I could count snowshovelling, until I tried it with a monitor on. Even with 6 inches of heavy, wet snow, I had to go at it like a madman to get up to 120, while my normal workout range is 140-160 (my max is 185, threshold around 165). I decided I could only count it as light lifting and still had to do my 2 hours on the bike trainer.

Well, well! We have a lot in common. LOL. I am a veggie and I really enjoy using my exercise ball to stay in shape. I don't use it solely to lose weight, though. I basically use it to tone. I take cardio classes at the gym to burn my calories.

There are several compound exercises which may help to burn some extra calories, but I think fitness ball workouts are better for bodyweight strength trainings.
