Usually if he stares at you a lot or smiles a lot when he is talking to you. Or if he looks away when you make eye contact. That's how I get whenever there's a girl that I fancy. :)
I think that if he is shy, chances are that he won't do anything about it, so you should initiate things and ask him out!

yeah - what meebo said, but maybe not quite to the "asking-out" point so quick. Try just saying "Hi" and get to the point where he's used to talking to you before you start seeing if he wants to go get some lunch or something. We shy fellows are easy to spook! Good luck!

well I'm shy. Whenever i have a crush on someone, i'm tensed. when he looks at me and if i'm laughing at that moment, i become tense and stop laughing.
I just can't help it.
