Whenever my cat's food dish is empty, he goes into the pantry and eats the broom and then promptly throws up afterward. Why does he do this and how do I get him to stop? He somehow broke the doorknob of the door by pushing on the door so much that it no longer latches. I have tried hiding the broom, burying it under other stuff but he still finds it and eats it. How do I get him to stop until I get a chance to fix the door?

Cats eat grass, which is why he eats the broom (I'm guessing). The grass is to help settle their stomachs (by disposing of the item upseting the tummy through vomiting). It also helps get rid of hair balls.

Duct tape the door or burn the broom, but most importantly, keep kitty's food dish full. He's hungry, it's upseting his stomache. If he gets fat, use diet cat food. Or, you can get cat food for sensitive stomachs or hairball control. I've had particular success with Science Diet.

Most of the time when a cat eats grass, it is to help settle his or her tummy. Changes in appetite or vomiting can also indicate internal disease (kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, etc.), toxin ingestion, or infectious disease.

If this is a new behavior, it would probably be best to get him to the vet and get him checked out. That way you know if it is something serious or not.

If the vet says kitty is fine, maybe try giving him an alternative such as cat grass (wheat grass) or some cat nip. Until then, get a bottle of bitter apple spray or some white vinegar and spray it on the broom. Cats hate the smell/taste of it and he should avoid the broom until then.

Good luck

Put your broom outside, or in the trunk of your car, or something. My cat will eat anything like a plastic bag, or wrapper off of something. I don't know if she does it to show me she is upset at me, or because she is hungry, or what. But if you can keep the broom away from your cat. Good Luck!!!

Your cat is probably craving grass - you can go to the pet store & buy him some kitty grass to munch on instead of the broom. If you have to, put the broom outside or hang it on the wall with hooks to keep it out of his reach.

he may be ill, when cats are sick they want and need to eat grass to settle their stomachs down 'so your kitty is eating a broom as he can;t get to the grassy area's...you should get him to the vet as he probably is sick and needs some medicine,,,,In the wild when cats get sick all they have is grass but your cat needs the vet asap,,,,,lol ps you should always leave dry food in their food dish 24/7 as they like to nibble at all times

Maybe it is the food it is eating. Also maybe get a new broom.

Grow him some Cat Grass -- you can get it at PetCo or PetsMart.

He may still throw up after he eats the Cat Grass (my cat does that too), but that's what it's for -- at least it's alot safer for his stomach than the broom.

Dogs sometimes eat grass to make them throw up too.

Makes sure you use cat greass from the Pet Store--grass from outside has chemicals (poisonous) on it -- yuk.
