307's were junk. pretty much all of them. something to do with the geometry (angle) of the throw of the pistons in the cylinders (sounds complicated) but basically what happens is the cylinders get out of round bad and they start burning oil. it's been a while since i seen one of these so I'm a little rusty on my info but i believe what I'm saying is true. i have seen where the oil smoke will be "cleaned up" by the catalytic converter. that's why it doesn't smoke real bad. good luck

No such thing as a 90's 307 cubic inch engine.

Chevy 305 from the 90's could be.

1 Qt. every 75 miles would mean leaking(on the ground), valve seals, and probably piston rings. Over 100K miles with indifferent maintenance. I would say typical.

2 choices really- 1. Buy a long block from a reputable company or shop. 2. Have this one rebuilt.

The third is get a different car, but that just might become obvious when you total up the bill.

People will tell you to run all kinds of tests on the engine. Why? Just to spend your money, that's why.

Your question tells me you can't run the tests, so you would have to pay someone to do it. Total waste, OK

Spending the money to freshen the engine on a "90's Oldsmobuick" may not be the best use of your resources. Think long and hard before dumping 1800 to 2700 bucks into a car worth less than 1,000 dollars.

If it burns a quart of oil every 75 miles, it smokes REAL bad. This kind of consumption cannot be attributed to minor things like valve seals - you have worn out pistons and/or piston rings and/or cylinders. Most likely, the engin is in beyond repair condition but the only way to verify that reliably is to take it apart - at leas heads need to go.

That's a lot of oil, could be rings or valve guide seals or just a leak from the valve covers.

Do you want to keep the car and put in a lot of money, that you won't get back, or use the money to upgrade on another newer, safer car?

The engine will need some work, check out prices with local mechanics about the cost of replacing the engine or rebuilding the engine.

Good luck either way.

i own a shop and id say it may be leaking some also if it used that much oil through the engine it would really smoke bad try removing the valve covers and see if the heads are stopped up on it if there's oil standing in the head that will cause it to smoke and use oil, clean the heads out especially where the oil holes are and it can return to the oil pan instead of staying in the top of the heads ,that may help it some, that may be the majority of the problem with it,good luck hope this helps.

whoever said they never made a 307 is dead wrong. Anyway, i always heard these engines were very strong, but maybe i was wrong. If maintenance was put off in the early years of the car, then it will smoke sooner. But if i were you, i would try some Restore. Add it to your oil next time you change it, you can find it at autozone or advance, or any auto parts store. It should at least make it smoke less.

No no longer regularly... yet Ford's guarantee coverage is 1qt each 1500 miles as max. yet have by no ability seen that (i've got seen regularly a million qt. each 3000 miles in the event that they do use oil.. maximum do no longer) yet while the engine is used heavily (a SVT COBRA is regularly ran particularly complicated), it could leak previous seals and be burned via the engine the place you does no longer be conscious the use externally and that determine for GM is in despute as i've got examine that GM says a million in 1k in some places, a million in 2k in others

it could have an oil gasget leak or you need a new engine. if its the oil leak then you need to find it and get the gasket replaced and it shouldn't use up so much oil.
