I am just a layman now, planning to get a job.

To broaden my opportunities, what software do i need to know to operate ?

For example - microsoft word , excel , etc

These are the two i am aware of ...

I worked in a large university where Windows and MS Office were used.

I now work in one of a group of 7 hospitals where Windows and MS Office are used.

Bill Gates didn't become the world's richest man by accident. His programs, at least at this time, dominate PCs.

The Microsoft Office Suite for starters:
1. Word
2. Excel
3. Outlook
4. Access

Then you may want to look into financial or account softwares, depending on what kind of office you plan on working for. Quickbooks, Quicken, and TurboTax would be useful.

I think depending on what you want to do but if you want to be an administrative assistant you need to know Microsoft Word and Outlook in most cases.
