When your belly expands beyond your baggiest waistbands, it's time to shop for maternity clothes. You don't need to spend a lot of money to get through your pregnancy in style. A few well-chosen pieces let you look professional and keep you comfortable. We all have at least a couple of things in our closets that we wear when we're a few pounds heavier than usual. Loose tops and pants or skirts with elastic or drawstring waistbands can be terrific pieces to get you through the first few months.

Even your favorite jeans can last a couple of extra months if you use a little ingenuity. Try this trick: Loop a rubber band through the buttonhole and then wrap it around the button. This will provide that crucial extra inch or two of breathing room.

A store-bought alternative is the belly band, a stretchy band you wear around your waist. The band holds up your jeans so you can leave them unzipped. On top, wear a long shirt to cover your quick fix.

Certain silhouettes are especially becoming on your changing form: A-line shifts, empire-waist dresses and tops, and pencil skirts paired with swingy shirts. For a sporty, hip look that showcases your "bump," pair low-rise pants with a fitted tee. Stretchy gauchos create a trim, neat silhouette, topped by a loose peasant-style top. And just about any style made out of slinky, stretchy fabrics can go the distance right up to delivery day.

Don't forget your mate's side of the closet, either. One of his oxford shirts worn unbuttoned over a form-fitting tee or tank — or buttoned over leggings — is a classic look. Make it more feminine by rolling up the sleeves and pairing it with an eye-catching choker or bangles.

Maternity clothes can be expensive, especially when you consider that you'll wear them for only a few short months. In fact, the more you can borrow from friends who blazed the baby trail before you, the better.

Check out consignment shops and thrift stores. Women who spend a lot on maternity clothes often try to recoup some of their costs by reselling them at such stores. With a little patience, you can score designer maternity duds at a fraction of the original price.

Good luck.

Whenever your regular clothes feel too snug or are uncomfortable. It sounds like you are ready. Sometimes the maternity pants you can buy are too big when you are just getting out of your own pants. Try purchasing pants in your regular size that have drawstrings (like workout pants). They will have the give you need to feel comfortable, but aren't as big as maternity "pouch" pants. I found that I was ready to change pants when I was barely two months preg with my second... it was about 4 months with the first.

Sounds like you've "popped", or are close to it. Depends how far along you are. I didn't buy any maternity stuff until I was 6 1/2 - 7 Months along. Buy just a couple pair of maternity jeans (they have diferent fits, No snaps or zippers, just pull on, and have different waists. Check out your maternity department at your favorite store) Also, you can get some nice maternity khakis. I'm 3months pp, and still like wearing some of my maternity stuff because its comphy.
Check out some of your re-sale shops. Hopefully you wont be in your preggo size for too long, and spending lots of cash on stuff you won't wear for long is just insane. Big tee shirts are your friend!!! (just wait till you have to go bra shopping! )

well, don't do anything that would hurt your tummy!!!
I wore maternity clothes very early...i had barely a tummy, but for me i needed the feel of nothing on my tummy....i could not have worn any jeans at all for example, so I wore maternity shorts (I lived in Hawaii back then) and big wide shirts. Everything needed to be loose and wide for me....
Was I always pretty??? I don't know...lol...but I definetely was very comfortable.....

id suggest maybe just wearing your slide on pants until they get to small, if need be for social reasons or work, maybe get one or two pairs of maternity pants... try to wait for as long as you can to get maternity clothes, theyre expensive and arent used for that long, i only bought a few pair of pants, and just got bigger sizes in tops, that way i was able to use the tops later for pjs.

If your clothes don't fit COMFORTABLY, or you look silly in them, it's time to get some maternity clothes. You should never wear anything that feels tight; restricting your circulation while you're pregnant is a big No-no.

Ummm. I think you are ready if your tummy is hurting.
But you dont have to go out buy a heap of expensive maternity stuff. I borrowed of my Mom, wore hubbys big shirts, anything loose.
