You have 3 years from the due date of the return to file and get any refund... There will be fines for late filing, with interest. This will be deducted from any refunds coming to them.

Not really - you're supposed to file on time anyway. But if you don't, and file within 3 years of the original deadline, you'll still get your refund and there won't be a penalty, so I suppose it amounts to the same thing. This is for federal - state rules vary, so you might have a problem there, or penalties, if you file late even if you don't owe.

But why would you want to wait that long to get your money?

You are only REQUIRED to file if you OWE taxes.

If you fail to file within three years of the due date, you forfeit all rights to your refund.

This is Federal law. State laws may vary. Check with your state's taxing authority.

It is true. But if you wait to long, you can lose your refund.
