Biblical scholars of any reputation say there are no first hand acccounts of Jesus. Historians state that Jesus probably lived but cannot verify any supernatural events that are ascribed to him. You'll have to draw your own conclusions from that. You can look up the historicity of Jesus on the web yourself and check this out. I think Jesus was probably a very charasmatic leader whose followers embellished his life until he was made more than human

Jesus got up after being dead three days, and started walking around like nothing ever happened, and then he rose into the sky and became a god.

What's so hard to understand?

He departed unto heaven with just the clothes he had on.

Now he's the only god in heaven with an earthly body as well as a change of earthly clothes.

It must be literal, or Christianity would mean absolutley nothing. The sacrifice of Jesus, as payment for our sins, is the Christians only hope of forgiveness.

It debases religion when you try to reduce its imagery to mere historical accounts of physical events.

The story of death and resurrection is a beautiful and admirable part of many cultures. In Greek mythology there is the return of Persephone from the underworld, symbolizing the return of spring after the darkness of winter.

The most ancient religious story of our Western world is the account of the man who was also God, who was killed and then resurrected. The Son of God, he is remembered in a meal of bread and wine, and offers you eternal life. His name is Osiris.

Later saviors likewise were mediators between God and man, and redeemers of mankind. In Greece the Osiris figure became Dionysus, and there are vases decorated with images of the people taking the bread and wine to remember him.

In Phrygia, the Osiris or Christ-figure is Attis, who was born on December 25, was crucified and buried for three days in a tomb sealed with a stone rolled over the entrance. After three days the tomb was opened and when it was seen to be empty the worshipers raised a cheer "He is risen!". This took place on Easter morning.

In Palestine, Paul wove together many ancient stories from the Mediterranean religions and added in some concepts from Persian Zoroastrianism, such as the contrast between the Prince of Light, Mazda, and the Evil One, Aharman. And being educated in Greek, Paul introduced ideas from Plato into Christianity, such as immortality, the soul, etc.

So Christianity is another manifestation of something very ancient and quite beautiful. Are its concepts, such as the resurrection of the redeemer, "literal"? Yes, they are, if you mean literal in the sense of being part of humanity's literature.

But the resurrections of religions are not historical. They are symbolic of the return of life to an earth deadened by winter. The grain of wheat was the Egyptian symbol for this, so the wheat stalk appears on many Greek inscriptions. When tombs are excavated in the Nile Valley, you often find wheat buried with the mummies, symbolizing resurrection.

When the gospel stories were written, the authors put into the story of Jesus the Egyptian idea of the corn of wheat which falls into the ground and dies but then comes to life again and gives life to others. In the "Hymn to Isis" the Egyptians sang - "O for a thousand tongues, to sing the great redeemer's praise."

In Greek culture, the reborn life is represented by Proserpine, the daughter of Ceres, who is the goddess of fertility, renewal of life, and the new growth of springtime. The annual Festival of Ceres is on April 19. So on Thursday when you eat your bowl of CEREal you will be partaking of the meal which commemorates Ceres on the day called Cerealia.

Let's enjoy the rich traditions which we have inherited from thousands of years of human experience, and revel in their symbolism and the way they speak to the human condition. Don't try to reduce them to the level of mere historical accounts, which they were never intended to be.

Listen, all I know is, the man rose from the dead, visited with his friends and then went to heaven to be with God. How it was done I do not know...perhaps a 4th dimension type thing.
