You can't get a truly free credit score, period. You can get a credit report, but the score is proprietary and is an upsell on "free credit reports." By the way, only annualcreditreport.com is a truly free credit report.

annualcreditreport.com is the industry supported, government mandated site that can provide you with a free credit report from all three national credit reporting agencies once every 12 months. Others - such as freecreditreport.com - are indeed wolfs in sheep clothing designed to upsell you to a credit monitoring service.
Your credit score - typically a FICO score - is available via all three credit reporting agencies - equifax.com (industry leader), transunion.com and experian.com - but there is a subscription charge to access it.
If you've had credit issues in the past, or if you're gearing up for a big purchase (house, car, etc.) then it might be more than worth subscribing to one of these (Equifax has a great service I use, can't really speak to the others as I haven't tried them). But if you're just curious, then get your free credit report to first check for errors - if there are errors, you can have them corrected, again at the credit reporting agency websites.
Good luck!

You can't get your credit SCORE for free, but you can get a copy of your credit report, which is USED to make your credit score, once every twelve months, without paying anything. (Be careful, they try to get you to subscribe to their pay services, though).
Your once-a-year free credit report can be found at the link below:
