I went to the hospital a few weeks ago and was admitted for a week. I've had issues with depreesion for awhile now, and just couldn't take it anymore. One thing that I had thought was that I may be Bi-polar, but the Pyschiatrist said he didn't really 'see that in me'.

Since I've been back though, I've had a couple people tell me they think that's what wrong. Could the doctor have been wrong because he only saw me in a certian enviroment? Am i just making myself believe this? Should I get a second opinion?

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

The doctors ended up diagnosing me with Major Depressive Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder.

I have these times when I'm fine, in between depression and it's like nothing is wrong, but then something small will happen.. and I'll just explode. And have gotten kind of violent a few times.

I think that if you do seek another opinion, you only do it one more time. Otherwise, you may end up going arround from doctor to doctor trying to get a diagnosis that you want, rather than one that is accurate.

Bipolar sucks much ***. And while many psychiatrists are starting to believe that all borderlines are bipolar-II, they often do not treat borderlines with traditional bipolar medications because bipolar-ii people never experience full mania.

My advice...get ONE more opinion. They will probably agree with the hospital. After that, it's just acceptance. And that takes a LOOOOOONG time. I don't think I've fully accepted my diagnoses (bipolar and BPD...OCD) yet....and I've had them (the diagnoses, that is) for over 1.5 years.

But the best way to find acceptance is to get help and understanding from professionals, friends, and family.
Good Luck.

First of all, have you had an episode of mania? Mania is not "violence," but an EXTREME elated mood state with the following symptoms:
talking fast
rapid thoughts
not needing sleep
starting projects and not finishing them
driving fast
hypersexual
tons of racing ideas

If you dont experience mania, you are not Bipolar. Violence does not mean you are Bipolar. And most mood episodes in Bipolar people last weeks or months. They do not change day to day or minute to minute.

I think that you were diagnosed correctly for what you presented with at this time.
Don't rush to be Bipolar...it sucks

It's never a bad idea to get a second opinion. You need to be your own health advocate. Get a second opinion, and maybe a third. Find out by talking to nurses and other people about the doctors you speak to. If they are known to be very good, thorough doctors, and they are telling all telling you that you are not bipolar, it may be time to believe it, and stop hanging on to a self diagnosis.

As with anyone else, the signs and symptoms are the way to know if the docs are right. I have a s-dau who is Borderline and a d-i-l that is too. They were both first dx as Bi-polar. Tell me a little of why you think you have problems.

It wouldn't hurt to get a 2nd opinion. What about talking this over with a counselor / therapist? Have you been in therapy?
Are you taking any medications? How long has this been going on? You're just getting diagnosed?
Is this your first hospitalization?

One of the symptoms of borderline personality disorder... is not being able to admit to yourself that it is actually what you have.

There is a grieving period, a fighting period and then an acceptance period.

Take your meds like a good little girl and deal with the fact that your neurosis isn't quite what you wanted for it to be...
