I would prefer a break down in religion/ethnic background, or a link to where I could find it, but if anyone has a total number (with proof), I would appreciate that too.

Noncombatant Deaths in WW II

The purpose of this page is to gather in one place the most accurate statistics available of noncombatants killed in the Second World War. I realize that this page is a slightly grisly idea, but the premise is simply that accurate information is a good thing.

The list of deaths should by no means be taken to mean that these people were the only ones to suffer. The amount of suffering brought on by the Nazi regime, in particular, is immeasurable.

I will update this page as the information becomes available to me. If you have additions or corrections, please send them, but be sure to include a verifiable reference. Where several estimates are available, I will include a representative range.

For my purposes noncombatants will include unarmed POW's.

Why would there be anything other than 'proof' of the known number of people that died? While it's impossible to know the true numbers, there are plenty of records that list in fairly detailed numbers the known number of victims. Since you are looking for links, I'll leave you one; I am curious as to why you are looking for this info through this forum when it is so easy to google this on your own.

To answer your question: the very first link that I found gave an estimate of 6 million killed because they were Jewish and another 9 million because they possessed some other trait the Nazis found undesirable. The breakdown by nation and a timeline can be found at the link listed below.

Over 10 million. I am not jewish.

"I am Jewish. I converted in 1978 after studying at the University of Judaism one year before marrying a Jewish man. I belong to a temple where my daughter attends religious school. I love the Jewish religion and I admire the Jewish community. In no way do I want to diminish the enormous magnitude of the victimization and murder of the 5,860,000 Jewish people. The Jews were singled out by the Nazis for total extermination -- a significant fact that I do not repudiate, nor want to diminish in any way. The Jewish people have done an extraordinary job of making the younger generation around the world aware of their persecution and the immense tragedy of the Holocaust.

But what about "the others"? There were five million of them. Who were they? Whose children, whose mothers and fathers were they? How could five million human beings have been killed and forgotten?

After studying carefully-documented books, and interviewing non-Jewish survivors, I found more information about the five million forgotten than I had ever imagined -- information that most people are not aware of. Polish citizens suffered enormously during the Holocaust -- Jews and non-Jews.

Eleven million precious lives were lost during the Holocaust of World War II. Six million of these were Polish citizens. Half of these Polish citizens were non-Jews. "

The Holocaust, also known as Ha-Shoah (השואה), in Hebrew, (see etymology), is the term generally used to describe the killing of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, as part of a program of deliberate extermination planned and executed by the National Socialist (Nazi) regime in Germany led by Adolf Hitler.[1]

Other groups were also persecuted and killed by the regime, including some 220,000 Sinti and Roma (see Porajmos), as well as the disabled (see Action T4), homosexuals, Communists and other political prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses, Polish citizens, and Soviet POWs (Ukrainians, Russians and Byelorussians).[2][3] Many scholars do not include these groups in the scope of the Holocaust[citation needed], defining it as the genocide of European Jewry, or what the Nazis called the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" ("Die Endlösung der Judenfrage"). Taking into account all of the victims of Nazi persecution, the death toll rises considerably: estimates generally place the total number of victims at 9 to 11 million.[4]

I feel horror and great pain at this suffering and worse. The Germans are not the only ones that are guilty in this. The whole world new this was happening even before Britain and the U.S. were drawn into the war. And no body was interested in this great travesty. There is no excuse for any one from this era who knew and never spoke up on this tragedy. I do not know to say to you or any one who may have had relatives who were victims of this genocide. I can not fathom the hate that it would take to perpetrate or to allow such an grossly horrendous act. God bless all of you

Twelve million
Of those 12 million, 6 million were Jews
and 2 MILLION were Jewish CHILDREN!

Does any other ethnicity compare or even come close to that number?

There is another genocide taking place right now, today, in Darfur, Sudan. Will we ignore their plight as our ancestors did in the '40s?

The exact number of people killed by the Nazi regime may never be known, but scholars, using a variety of methods, including documentation from the Nazis of determining the death toll, have generally agreed upon common range of the number of victims. Recently declassified British and Soviet documents have indicated the total may be somewhat higher than previously believed.[33] The following estimates provide a range of the number of victims:

* An estimated 5 to 6 million Jews,[34] including 3 million Polish Jews
* Estimates place total number of Polish deaths around 5.4mln [35]. 1.8 – 1.9 million Christian Poles and other (non-Jewish) Poles (estimate includes civilians killed as a result of Nazi aggression and occupation but does not include the military casualties of Nazi aggression or the victims of the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland and of deportations to Central Asia and Siberia)[36]
* 200,000 – 800,000 Roma & Sinti (Gypsies)
* 200,000 – 300,000 people with disabilities
* 80,000-200,000 European Freemasons[37]
* 100,000 communists
* 10,000 – 25,000 homosexual men
* 2,500 – 5,000 Jehovah's Witnesses[38]

Can't give you exact numbers, but one thing is certain -- the Holocaust effected ALL Jews. About 70 percent of Jews worldwide were slaughtered. You would be hard pressed to find a Jew who hasn't lost a relative in the Holocaust.

The Holocaust did not effect ALL of any other culture.
