My w-2s are somewhere at home & I am in college hours away. I looked at the extension form, but I don't know what to do because I don't owe money, so if someone could please help me put I'd appreciate it!

This site tells you all about extensions.

You don't need one if you're getting a refund. You should only file for an extension if you owe, as penalties and interest will be assessed.
You have 3 yrs. from the deadline to claim your refund.

See http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf?portlet=3 for info on filing for an extension.

Technically you are required to file for an extension if you're going to be late filing even if you have a refund coming - but if you don't, there aren't any penalties as long as you don't owe anything.

I don't know how the IRS would feel about this, but I'll tell you what I did and you make of it what you will.

My experience is that you are not penalized for a late tax return, you are penalized for late payment of taxes. Technically speaking, you have paid all of your income taxes on time via deductions from your paychecks. I've sent in late tax returns in the past and my return was deposited into my bank account, with no penalty.

The IRS is concerned with getting their money, not a statement of your income, you have given them what they want...

Legally speaking, of course, H&R Block and a formal rep of the IRS would probably tell you different, this is just my experience.

If you're getting a refund I don't think the government cares if you're late. It's more when you owe them money they get picky about it.
