Certified? Insured?
Could I even just drop it in the mailbox without any of that?
Thanks!

Certified mail as it provides positive proof of the mailing date. There is no need to insure it, however, nor do you need a return receipt on it.

First class is OK but there's no guarantee that a return placed in the mail today will actually be postmarked today.

Standard Mail... The USPS is very reliable and is well-prepared for the increase in mail volume going to the IRS this time of year. Also, the IRS has special boxes with the USPS for this purpose, and there is a plan in place to get returns delivered quickly and successfully to these boxes (note the address you mail your return to, sometimes it's just the IRS and a city, state and ZIP. They've got it all figured out...)

Keep copies of your tax return and w-2's in the event of a breakdown, although this is HIGHLY unlikely.

You can just send it regular mail. No need for certified as long as you have copies of all your info. Make sure it's postmarked by tomorrow!

Have your tax guy send it electronically ... get your refund quicker too. Less likely of getting audited also.
