I would like to make a "Care Box" to keep in my car to give to homeless people that I see on the side of the roads, and in parking lots. I would like for it to contain a couple of meals that need no preparation, a bottle of water, and some other items that would be of benefit. What would you suggest putting in such a kit?

Last night in a parking lot I was approached by a woman asking for food for her and her daughter. I gave her my last $10.00, but then wished that I had been able to show some foresight and compassion by having something more personal and useful to give other than money.

Wet wipes, tissues and hand sanitizer. Toothbrush and paste.

Go to the Red Cross website; you could use their suggestions for care boxes for disaster victims.

This is a wonderful idea for putting love into action, and I commend you for it.

:)

Your efforts are very noble. However, I think your mission would be better accomplished if you donated items to a shelter of some sort. That would save you time and assure that the items are being given to those in need who are working through the proper channels.

I never give anything directly to an individual. Not to be harsh, but giving money directly to a homeless person is a bit like feeding a stray cat. I have lived in a community that was very liberal in its support of homeless people until the town was just about over-ran by those looking for handouts, free money, etc.

Many homeless people are mentally ill. Many homeless people also have problems with drugs/alcohol. Giving them money does nothing to address this problem. It just encourages them to hang out and get free stuff.

I know not everyone is a perennial homeless booze bag. Those who are homeless due to a short-term setback can get assistance in a Salvation Army, Red Cross, etc. shelter. That's why I only donate to organizations that can address providing the homeless with basic necessities for survival.

Edit: Look out for the ones who say things like "I just ran out of gas" or "It's my birthday" or "Down payment on a cheeseburger?" and other hardluck BS stories.

Soap, shampoo, deodorant, comb extra blankets are always nice if you have any lying around dog or cat food you would be surprised at how many homeless people have pets as for food canned stuff is good stews beans etc crackers are good protein bars canned milk anything that is not perishable and doesn't taste too bad cold. What a wonderful thing you are doing good for you remember to also donate to your local food shelves!! Oh yes hats and mittens are always needed also warm clothes even in southern states it gets cold at night

Good question. I like the idea of a water proof poncho, and putting everything in a backpack is good too.
I would add a bar of soap, washcloth, tooth brush and tooth paste, deoderant, energy bars, a couple of bottles of water, a blanket, scarf, gloves, and wool hat, and a card with the names and addresses of local shelters and soup kitchens. I wouldn't suggest money though.
That's a wonderful thought, if more people would do this it would help out.

A small Bible, a gift card fast food restaurant (10 to 20), two phone numbers to AA or NA and local homeless shelter assisstance #. I forgot, a simple card that other people care for you and there is light at the end of the tunnel

First, I think what you are doing is terrific. Second, keep in mind who this is going to. Do they have a place to keep and store a Bible? Are they even Christian? If you are Christian, and on the street, what use is a holy book from another faith? Same for the radio, how soon will it be lost and do they gave money for batteries? I would choose warm mittens and scarves, pocket hand warmers, small bottles of hand sanitizer or soap and shampoo. Fresh clean (new) socks and underwear can be helpful, too.

I like the first answerer's idea. Also soap, toothbrush and toothpaste. Mints. Gloves. Socks. A few dollars, coupons or gift certificates for local restaurants. Maybe a department store gift card.

Having been homeless, I can say that I would have appreciated these things.

***Chicky mentioned tissues and hand sanitizers. I would include them too.

**Let's add nail clippers, lip balm, and moisturizers. 2 in one shampoo even. Deodorant. Hairbrush or comb. It's quite possible to bathe in a public restroon, so a towel and washcloth would also come in handy. You are such a dear for doing this.

Toothbrush & toothpaste
Soap
Deodorant
Old but usable towels
Blankets
Socks
Brush & comb
Shampoo

While I believe your intentions are wonderful, you may find more satisfaction in volunteering with a local soup kitchen or another group that helps the homeless. Not only will you have the support of others, you will have better resources.

Good luck!

We use paper bags and include gloves, socks, anything with protein (buy bulk), personal hygiene items, and (if you can afford it or get them donated) a blanket.
I've had people suggest a rain poncho, but I have done that yet...sounds like a good idea.

Of course you want to put some easily prepared, non-perishable and highly nutrituos foods, and some water. Also information about services that may be available to them in their community would be helpful.

You would also want to help them find their way home, so put a small bible in there as well.

God loves homeless people and so do I.
