Dolphin (porpoise) is a MAMMAL not a fish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin) !!

Dolphins are OFTEN found around schools of tuna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuna), and international law prohibits killing dolphins while fishing the tuna.

The Dorado (mahi mahi in Hawaiian) is sometimes called a dolphin... and IS a fish. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahi-mahi)

I've caught both Dorado and 3 species of Tuna during my sailing and Navy career in the Pacific: both are YUMMY... and could NEVER harm a Dolphin / Porpoise.

Ok, there are 3 types of Dolphin:

(1) Dolphin - the swimming mammal - we dont eat that one
(2) Dolphin - a generic salt-water fish - very tasty - if you see "dolphin steak" in a restaurant, this is what it is
(3) Dolphin Tuna - a special breed of Tuna that is a hybrid breed of Tuna and Dolphin fish - this produces and uncanny by salty fish

And yes, Tuna by itself IS a fish.

Tuna is a fish. An apex preditor and there are many different species.
Tuna are several species of ocean-dwelling fish in the family Scombridae, mostly in the genus Thunnus. Tunas are fast swimmers—have been clocked at 77 km/h (48 mph)—and include several species that are warm-blooded. Unlike most fish species, which have white flesh, the flesh of tuna is pink to dark red. This is because tuna muscle tissue contains greater quantities of myoglobin, an oxygen-binding molecule. Some of the larger tuna species such as the bluefin tuna can raise their blood temperature above the water temperature with muscular activity. This enables them to live in cooler waters and survive a wider range of circumstances. Some tuna species and fisheries are overfished and there are risks of some tuna fisheries collapsing

As the other posters have said Tuna is Tuna. Dolphin fish is sometimes referred to as Mahi Mahi.

But a Dolphin is a mammal and it isn't eaten.

I thought it was from a chicken. Tuna is the name of the fish that tuna comes from. Salmon comes from a fish called salmon, trout comes from a fish called trout, catfish comes from a fish called catfish, and so on and so on.

You might be confused.

Dolphin Fish is the same thing as Mahi Mahi or Dorado

This might be where you heard it. Dolphin Fish and/or the dolphin that is a mammal are NOT tuna.

Hope that helps. :o)
