I am not a huge fan of guns that have a lot of "kick". But I need a ccw for my job, and i find the Glock 19 loaded with 147 gr hollowtips perfect. However, counless people have told me that a 9mm even with hollowpoints is not an adequate "man stopper" and I should switch to the .40, .357, or .45. Others have told me if you should shoot the gun you are more comfortable with and that shot placement is key and that caliber doesn't mean sh*t. My follow up shots on the .40 are real slow and i am not nearly as accurate with it as i am with the 9 mil. Is it better to shoot the gun you are more accurate with and can fire off real fast follow up shots? Or do I go with the larger gun just to put a bigger hole in a the guy? Is a 9mm enough and does a .40 offer me a "one shot stop"? thanks a lot.

Jeff has a great answer. I'll only add this, if the scenario you are specifically thinking about is some sort of crazed drug addled behemoth then why are you stopping at .40? You can quite easily get into a Glock 20 in 10mm which is a highly comparable gun to the M&P. In other words, where does it stop? At the end of the day, a 9mm with defensive ammo is going to tear holes in someone. It's not as if the approximately 100 foot pounds of energy difference between a 9mm and a 40 is the difference between the round bouncing off of a leather jacket and ripping the assailant a new orifice. What matters is can you hit the jacket? Can you keep your head cool in the situation? Are you willing to shoot until the threat is gone? If the answer to those three are yes - it doesn't matter which of those calibers you pick. If the answer to those three are no - it still doesn't matter what caliber you pick. If with one of the calibers the answer to the first question is yes and the other caliber the answer is maybe ... well pick the yes caliber. Thinkingblade

Those "countless" people are dumbasses who don't have a clue and need to shut up. Your Glock is just fine as well as the ammo. I don't own a 9mm or a Glock anymore but don't let some gun magazine whack-off commando tell you that a 9mm is not enough. I am sooooooooooo tired of these morons.

If I were you I would go with the Colt Combat Commander in 45ACP.... It is the ultimate Man Stopper... It depends whether you want to end up being a Victim or Survivor.. Six feet above ground or six feet below > You choose..
