question about dampeners?

1. do u know of an alternative cheaper way that i could make myself? (not elastic band)
2. if not, then do u know if dampeners that would work for variable load?

The only dampeners I know of that will work with variable loads are the pneumatic type (air shocks) that have an inlet so you can change the air pressure within them.
