The big trick to fishing is figuring out what kind of fish are present, and what they will eat.
There is 2 good ways to find out what fish are there. One is to ask people who fish there. the other is to go fish there with worms for bait. Worms and minnows are as close as you can get to universal fish food.
Once you catch a fish, cut it open and check it's belly. Is it full of worms, minnows, crayfish (like mini lobsters), or something else? Let their stomach be your guide.

Have you heard the saying, "10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish"? It's true. Those who think it's just luck make up most of the 90% who don't catch much.
As to specifics, there's a lot, depending on the type of fishing you're doing. Hints for big game fishing in the open ocean wouldn't help much when fly fishing for trout, or casting artificials for bass, or surfcasting for striped bass, or whatever.
But in general, you should pay attention to everything you can -- both in the water (temperature, clarity, current, presence/abscence of bait, etc.), and what other people are doing to succeed (or not succeed) -- as well as paying attention to what you're doing. Try to "think like the fish" to figure where they might be, why they're biting or not biting, what baits or lures might work.

The trick of fishing can be summed up in one word.... confidence. If you dont have confidence in your ability or yourself, you are doomed to fail. Every time I go out and fish, I feel I will catch and be successful. If I am not, I analize what could have been wrong and correct it for next time those particular conditions arise. No matter what I will never loose confidence in my ability to fish and catch fish.

There is no trick to catching fish. Knowledge is required to become proficient and that only comes from time spent practicing and gaining experience.

As far as bait goes, ask your local bait shop. Are you fishing in freshwater or saltwater? There are big differences between the two.

Know what you are trying to catch. Know where it is. Know what it is likely to strike on. And have patience.
These are the only "tricks"...

Patience, perseverance, and a willingness to learn, either by trial and error or books, or asking people who do know...
Mostly patience and perseverance.
