I have read several medical blogs about children with various medical conditions that are TPN-dependent. I know of at least one child who went into liver failure as a result of this. What causes this form of nutrition to be so hard on the liver?

This is because it is very concentrated and there is just so much that the liver can metabolise at a time. If it continues then the liver gets damaged and if it continues further then one can go into liver failure. This is why liver functions are kept under a check all the time that one is getting TPN, good luck
