I get headaches, a lot! Migraines (sp?) do run in my family, on both sides but everytime I tell the dr. this it's like she doesn't really take it seriously, she said that she thinks I am having them right now b/c my wisdom teeth are impacted and I have to get them cut out this summer. My aunt drinks gatoraide for her migranines and she said it works it helps a little bit, but I was wondering if anyone knew anything other then tylanol, advil and excedrin I could take for my headaches until I get my wisdom teeth out??

Have you ever considered trying Massage Therapy for your headaches/migraines? I am a massage therapist and do Neuromuscular Therapy which works on a persons pain and posture misalignments. We work on a lot of people who say they suffer from Headaches. We usually have them look at pain patterns to see if these certain muscles may be causing their headaches. If you are interested look up on the internet pain patterns for the following muscles and see if they look like what you are suffering from, if so seek someone in your area that does Neuromuscular Therapy and see if they can help you.

Muscles to consider:

1. Sternocleidomastoid (SCM), which produces a pain in the ear (may cause ringing), forehead, and face and also can effect your eyes.

2. Trapezius. Also causes a heacache pain, but usually starts at the base of your skull and starts to round to the front of your head

3. Temporalis / Massater. I would considre these more if your teeth hurt along with getting your headache.

If these do look like your pains, and you find someone to work on you and have them take a look at your posture because a lot of times posture can be a main reason for these muscles producing these pains.

Good luck!!!

Well it does sound like maybe you are getting migraines. There are certain indications as to whether theses are migraines, e.g. pain on one side, light sensitivity, nauseated, etc.

If you do have migraines you need to see a "good" doctor, a neurologist that specializes in migraines. It sounds like there is a strong hereditary component to theses headaches which is confirmed by research. your aunt might be suffering from exercise induced headaches/migraines given the remedy.

So what to do about pain. you need to get imitrex from a doctor to see if its effective. This is is a migraine smart drug and if it does not work on your headaches it might point to other types of headaches.
Limit excessive caffeine use. but if you have migraine do not hold back. take Excedrin (best over the counter migraine med) and also take some Starbucks if your stomach can handle it.
Also take prescription does of Advil, 800mg or four Advil. This can be taken four times a day.

But the bottom line is that you must see a good neurologist. Neurologist specialize in headache, internal medicine doctors (is this your doctor)? are horrible at migraine/headaches.

You are 15-18yrs old (that's wisdom teeth age) so hormones would play a huge factor in headaches. Also family history cannot dismissed.

Best of luck. I am rooting for you.

P.S.
the below sources will help you greatly if you have questions. They are comprehensive and extremely reputable.

I have migraine-like headaches, but not actually migraines. I use aspirin. I've never found Tylanol to be particularly effective for pain of any kind. Ibuprofin also works.

Try this and see if it makes any difference. Take 3 Advil or Excedrin. Then if your headache continues an hour later, take one more. If this makes no difference in your headaches then this method isn't going to help, but it is something to try. What this does is get the level of aspirin in your blood higher, quicker.

If it does seem to help, then 2 hours later, revert to the instructions on the bottle which is typically 2 tablets every 4 hours.

Do always make sure to eat something like a piece of bread or some crackers when taking aspirin.

Maybe the Headaches are a sign you shouldn't wait till summer to get you wisdom teeth taken care of.
Your wisdom teeth if coming in incorrectly can cause other issues with you bite and other teeth also.
I would call your dentist and discuss the issue.
If you are in school you can probably have your teeth done on a Thursday, that way you'll have a 4 day weekend to recover.
You can ask your teachers ahead of time for your lessons to work on at home so you don't get behind. Or do them the weekend before.

I am guessing you are in the area of 18 to 21. Women have HORMONE headaches. I had migraines from 6 years old.
At 37 had a Hysterectomy and they stopped immediately.
I was astounded. 37 years and I never knew that.

Ice packs on the back of your neck will help for me heat worked the best.

I forgot to say that a Chiropractic adjustment should be first, that would most likely solve any maladjustment you have of your spine. That is a MAJOR cause of headaches.

I would wet a hand towel, heat it in the microwave for 40 seconds, I liked it hot. Lay it on your face till it starts to cool and reheat and then the back of your neck, this helped me totally. In desperation I would blow my face and head and neck with the hair dryer.
It would feel so good and relieve the pain. Drink hot liquids to warm your face and the bones in your face. This is what always worked for me.

Mouth wash with Hydrogen Peroxide to help the mouth pain from your Wisdom teeth. Brush it into the gums to leak into the root area. Hydrogen Peroxide is an excellent pain killer for any and all mouth pain.

Swish and brush once or twice a day with it. It should help fairly quickly.

Good Luck, I really sympathize.

Well, I should first mention that if you do take Excedrin, DON'T drink things with caffeine. It has caffeine in it so it can actually harm you.

Next, I would definitely see if you can talk with another doctor. I have had wisdom teeth problems but they weren't the cause of my migraines. If your migraines aren't treatable with over the counter medications you may need a prescription. See if there is another Dr. in the office that you can see.

Headaches can have a lot of causes. I would look at these:
Hydration - drink plenty of water - not coke! Caffiene is a diuretic. It might make the headache go away, but bring it right back because it makes your body get rid of water - causing dehydration and more headaches.
Allergies - you may be busy fighting allergens and experience headaches as one of the side effects.
My first line of defense for headaches is exercise. That will work. Don't worry about migraines - everyone says they get those, but they aren't that common.

If this dr doesnt take you seriously, see another and demand to get tests done. Headaches can be a symptom of something more serious and the sooner you get to the bottom of it the better. I have also heard gatoraid works.

There are lots of natural headache remedies. I'm a migraine sufferer. It is a good idea to reduce your reliance on using pain killers. However, natural remedies may not work all the time but they do help.

Headaches can be caused by minor problems
like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons
like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can
have harmful side effects, so it is better to
modify your lifestyle. More information available at
