Hi I am 5 foot 6 and weigh 9 stone. I am looking to lose about 4lb but more importantly get in shape for summer!! I am walking to and from work, about 15 mins on the flat and about 15 mins up an 18 degree hill but downhill on the way home. I am starting a bums, thighs and tums excersice class, once a week. Is this enough exercise to get into shape? Also is there any point going to an excercise class that is just once a week? Thanks, any tips appreciated. I already eat a fairly healthy diet, but have put on some weight comfort eating recently.

It sounds like your going the right way about losing the weight keep it up.
once a week is probably enough to reach your goal, but if you can get in some more walking that would help, I would seriously recommend shopping, you don't have to buy anything but walking round town all day whilst concentrating on the shops helps you exercise without getting bored of it.

You sound a ok to me wished I was 9 stone but am trying lol.
I find the best excersise for me is walking too and 10.000 steps a day should ensure good toning buy a monitor to attach to your skirt or trousers and you will be amazed at how much you do do.
Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated and skin looking good.
I am doing the GI diet Rosemary Conley and in one week I have lost 9 inches all over.

You seem to have a good weight for your height-

Keep on walking, if necesarry, speed up the walk at times.

Also one class is good enough to learn what to do, you can have your own home session by doing some of the exercise you do at class and so have two work out session per week.

The only way to lose weight is to burn the calories and by watching what you eat. Walking is not going to help you much. Try doing more vigorous exercises like jogging, swimming and cycling for at least 30mins to 45mins non-stop at least 3 times a week. I doubt your exercise class will help you much where fat burning is concerned.

you can take class - at least you will not get bored fast.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats and it will tell you how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight. take 300-400calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones.
5-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
8 glasses of water a day.
4-6 times a week cardio work out for 30-50min plus light weight training.
no junk food, no sodas, no white flour (white bread, pasta, cookies, cakes etc)

Hi!

The best way to tell if you're going to lose weight is to understand calories. (see link below)

http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/loseweight/loseweight.html

To lose 1lb of fat, you need to burn or cut out 3,500 calories. If you spread this over a week, you'd need to cut out 500 calories every day.

You probably need about 2,000 calories to maintain your body weight. So take 500 off and you should be left with a diet of 1,500 calories per day.

Start making a food chart and record everything that passes your lips! (meals, snacks, drinks, alcohol and even the odd toffee or biscuit!) It's a bit of a pain at first, but if you do it in Word or Excel, you'll have an electronic reference of all of your usual foods and their calorific values pretty soon! Until then simply type "calories banana" "calories chips" etc into Google, if you can't get the calories from the packet!

If you follow this eating plan and then keep doing your walking and exercise class, you should lose between 1-2lbs per week. You should be in shape for summer with no problems!

If you continued to eat at a normal rate (i.e. 2,000 calories per day) you probably wouldn't lose any weight. Walking for 60 minutes per day is great (I imagine your walking about 2 or 3 miles?) - you should keep this up! However, you're probably only burning about 100 calories a day... meaning that you're burning 500 calories per week! This is great, but remember that you still need to burn an extra 3,000 calories if you want to lose 1lb.

(see below)
http://walking.about.com/cs/howtoloseweight/a/howcalburn.htm

So my advice is to combine the two - record your diet and stick to 1,500-1,600 calories per day, including weekends, then keep up your walking and you should be fine.

Just don't eat less than 1,500 calories per day, as your body may go into starvation mode and prevent you from losing any weight!

Good luck! You've only got 4lbs to lose, go for it!

xx Emmie

When you walk, try and walk as fast as you can. I find this works well, as I walk to and from Uni and work.

I eat a lot, but frequently, this keeps your metabolism steady. I also don't mind eating lots in the daytime - just try and avoid food after 7pm if possible as the body's metabolism slows right down so your body burns the food off so much slower.

Drink plenty of water, and if possible, only water. carry one with you so you are not tempted to buy other drinks. I only drink water (and chinese tea, or freshly squeezed juice but not often) - drinking warm water will make you feel full and cold water will help speed up your metabolism.

when you eat, chew thoroughly and slowly, this will help make you feel fuller and eat less.

Remember, any movement will burn calories, i.e. cleaning, walking from one end of the room to the other, up and down the stairs, etc etc

Skipping with a rope will burn lots of calories and not too much hard work either.

As you're sat down, watching telly, studying, etc, tighten and relax your abdominal muscles to help tone them up, like doing sit ups, and clench your buttocks too.

If you feel like eating, drink water and buy some chewing gum!!!

Good luck!
