Try Home Depot or a Mountaineering supply store.

Be careful though, the rope should not be too long. It should not allow more than about 25 people on each end. A few years ago some folks tried to have the longest tug of war in the world to make it into the Guinness Book of Records ... they got a really long rope and put like a 1000 people on it... the rope stretched and then snapped and when it snapped it tore the fingers right off dozens of people! wo, that would be bad.

You have to go to the Tug of War store. There you will find all the necessary equipment: rope, gloves, shoes, sandboxes, and even some personal training programs to help you learn the right strategies for good teamwork.

If they don't have a Tug of War store in your town (but most do!) then maybe try an Army/Navy Surplus store. Ask for all the tugging equipment, usually in a whole Tug-of-War section by itself.

The Navy uses a lot of tugboats, so they have everything.

The Dept. of Defense sells tug of war rope. go to www.gov.tugowr.rope/length.[prvt)..navy.sales.kk1

the standard length is 4inches but they can get lengths up to 10 inches... all you need is your federal and state tug-of war permit, your id # and local permit and an account with the Pentagon, a credit card and a note from your mother

remember, tugging without an official rope is a felony
