A former inmate of the California state prison states that he worked while in prison and needed to file 3 years of back taxes but doesn't have any W-2's. He explained to me what form is needed, form 4852, but it has the same questions as a regular W-2; like any federal and state taxes withheld, etc. He did let me know that he was making minium wage while incarcerated. I need a little more information so that I can help this person

While prison wages are taxable, few prisoners make enough to have a tax liability. I've never know of an inmate that made anywhere near minimum wage from the prison system. 10 - 25 cents per hour is pretty typical and $1 per hour is a king's ransom in the joint. No taxes are withheld so that's easy to figure.

in case you do no longer earn any funds you do no longer could record a tax return. in case you earn an earnings this is severe sufficient which you're required to record a tax return, then you definately would desire to do it. while you're in reformatory your relative won't be able to declare you as a based. The feds are paying all the charges of helping you. reliable success.

He will probably qualify for free assistance with his taxes from VITA. Go to irs.gov and type that in the search box in the top right hand corner.
