Depends on the year, and type of 4WD system you have. Jeep Grand Cherokee's either have Quadra-Drive, or Quadra-Trac systems. Quadra-Drive is a full time 4WD system that has 4WD all time, Neutral, or Low Range. Quadra-Trac is a full time/part time system in one. It allows 2WD, 4WD Part Time, 4WD Full Time, Neutral, and Low Range. Withe Quadra Drive the driver doesn't have to do anything, the system automatically detects wheel slip and engages the 4WD system. The Quadra-Trac system requires the driver to select the 4WD position. Part Time 4WD is only to be used offroad, or in snow, ice, or mud. Full time 4WD can be left engaged year round if you choose and can be used on dry pavement.

It probably depends on the year. Older means you may need to lock out the front hubs. There will be a "knob" in the center of each front wheel. Turn it from the "free" position to "locked." Then inside the vehicle, there is a gear shift lever that would indicate 2 High, 4 High, and 4 Low. Probably select 2 High unless you are going in REALLY rough terrain. My Nissan has instructions on the visor as to what gear shift position is what mode of 4 wheel drive. You may also watch for a dash light indicator as you move the 4WD shifter. Our Blazer is much simpler, and newer, it just has two buttons on the dash. One for 2WD and one for 4WD. There are small lights in each button so you know which is activated. Hope these thoughts help.

depends on the year you have, if u have a 93-04: there's a stick next to the transmission stick, that is the transfer case, just make sure you select 4wd full time or 4wd part time, or maybe your jeep has a 4wd by default and runs 4wd all the time. good luck.
