Look her straight in the eye and say " I don't know how to answer that. what about you?" I usually sidestep questions with just a simple "Really?" and let it go.

Just say- why do you ask? If they are being nosy, it puts them on the spot, usually resulting in an uncomfortable "I was just wondering." Then raise your eyebrows and say "oh?" and change the subject. this works with anyone but the rudest people, who will push the subject. then you just say, that's rather, personal, I'd rather not discuss it right now.

If someone asks you a personal question, then give them a reply of "That's an awfully personal question for you to be asking, don't you think so?" Then walk away. Enough said.

Tell them to mind their own business, but if there are people around, do it politely, to avoid any awkwardness in the fact that you are trying to escape. I wish you specified what kind of questions, coz u may be having some skeletons in your closet. Avoid being in a situation like that when its your sister in law. Avoid her if you have to, i.e if you try talking to her and it doesnt help.

sonmetimes i laugh it off with "oh, it's a long story, we'd be here all day!"
if they push, I respond with "i don't feel comfortable talking about that right now, ya know?" and change the subject.
if they keep on pushing, i tell them point blank, "it's none of your concern, sorry"

It's entirely appropriate to say something like, "I'd rather not discuss that. Thanks." Then change the subject. If they push the issue at this point just repeat that you prefer not to discuss it.
Some people, eh?

In front of everybody when these questions are asked, tell your sister inlaw. "This is why no body likes you. Now I understand."

Tell them to back off. You can do this politely, unless more force is necessary :) Tell them you are not comfortable discussing those things with them, or the place is not appropriate, or simply that it is none of their business.

Just say 'it's personal'. They don't get the answer they're looking for and also, you don't suffer. It's quick and easy.
