My family has a history of adoption...for instance, my grandparents adopted 50 kids in their lifetime...yah, 50!!! It's nuts...anyways, I had a very interesting discussion with my parents today...

I am 25, single, live in Toronto and am going back to Laos (a impovished country next to Thailand) in a few months. They had a serious discussion with me and said there are a few people who would like me to adopt their child. There are restrictions of course, but I will bypass them according to them because we have a history with the government and history with adoption.

I am not sure I am ready for a child...but I know when I go there and see the impovished kids I might change my mind...I hope it doesn't sound selfish, but by adopting a child and raising him or her, doesn't it make me almost untouchable to ladies to date now?

I am thinking this is a bad idea to adopt; but I can't ignore all the history my family has with adoption....

Adoption is wonderful but only if you are ready for a family. As for making you undatable I don't think that would be a problem, a good girl may like you more for having a heart in the first place. So I guess it depends on the type of girl you are looking for.

I think at 25 u have all the time in the world to worry about children - and although u may think its a weird idea, why dont u try and have kids of ur own when the right lady comes along? A lady would help you equally in the looking after a child and being a single parent is meant to be very hard, and as ur quite young it seems u have doubts... i think the age is 35 in the uk to adopt a child so why not wait a couple of years? Make sure also, you are doing whats best for the child, because although you say that you can 'bypass government laws' this isnt always so easy, and although there are starving children - u have to make sure u r at first stable enough for them for u 2 move in with.

Yes you can ignore it. You are you, and have your own life. If your not ready or don't want to adopt then don't. Adoption isn't a tradition, it's a privilege. Meet your true love, maybe have your own children, don't follow the herd!

i think you should try to think for yourself. a lot of ppl try to carbon copy their parents. they will copy the good as well as the bad.

sometimes the good is just as bad as the bad.

you sound like someone who follows what your parents did. i know people like you.

i totally suggest you dont adopt. yes it will make you undateable. youre very young at 25.

it is up to you however. just make sure youre doing it for you.

your gparents did it for them. dont do something because you think its in your genes or you feel sentimental. thats just silly. its not a good reason for doing things.

learn to trust your natural intuition and do things with a creative and come from within, not from outside notions of sentimentality.

gl whatever you do.
