As a visitor summer is probably the best time as it has the best weather and all the tourist attractions are operating. August is a busy month as this coincides with the school holidays and there's often long queues to get into places and prices of accommodation are at their highest. July avoids the peak holiday season and the weather is just as good.
The best of the weather is July / August but you'll find that all attractions are open May - September, most open longer and a lot are open year round.
One drawback with the summer months is the amount of traffic on the roads. At weekends and bank holidays you can spend hours stuck in traffic jams - best avoid travelling at these times if possible.
Spring and Autumn are very mixed. It's early spring now and the weather is very hot and sunny. This same time last year it was very wet, cold and snowing in places.
Winter can also be a good time to visit, it's cold but if you like snowy scenery then Scotland is a fantastic place to visit - it is at any time of year but when the mountains are covered with snow they're amazing.

I was married to someone from the UK> We went both in Spring and in winter(which, although bloody freezing still had a lot of charm, especially at Christmas). It depends what YOU are looking for. Do you love snow, and Christmas, or do you love Spring, and flowers and thawing out of things in general?
