2. Learn to identify people you know are good company and cultivate their friendship.

Do you mean disagreeable people or people who might lead you into trouble?
You cannot avoid disagreeable people, they are everywhere. All you can do is be graceful about it.
To avoid trouble, listen to that little voice that tells you "This is a bad idea" and get your butt outta there.
