I live about 3 miles from campus, so I will ride my bike to school every day. I need a little bit faster bike, and with good brakes, previous 2 I have bought broke in less than a month; brakes just stopped working. And I need very good lock, because people are stealing bikes a lot! Which one should I buy, and where I should put it. Willing to pay $350 at most for the bike. Thanks!

Any road bike, or highbred will work. Try Dawes, Trek or Giant. Your brakes can be repaired by buying better quality pads. Also, run some oil down the cables.

Try to go for branded components, like Shimano, or SRAM. Truvative, Bontaga, etc.

If you want speed, you want lower weight, so go for an alli frame. Also, look at a race style. Skinny tyres will also help.

If you want a bike to last more than a couple weeks, don't go to Walmart or Target, go to a bike shop. They can put you on a low end mtb, with slicks, disc brakes, and a lock, right in your price range. They will normally support the bike after you buy it as well. Some shops give lifetime adjustments on what they sell (adjustments, not parts!), and that will keep the bike working the way it should.
