It stops - you stop - its terminal.
But short of it actually stopping totally, your brain is like the rest of your body, (if not prone to a genetic defect, or other health issues) the better you use it, the less chance you'll loose it.
Muscles need exercise and so does your brain. Puzzles, reading, and being mentally active keeps the brain in peak condition.
This was proven in a study using retired elderly nuns in the same convent. So same food, same environment, same age group, and these sisters had been there for the same sort of time. Those sisters whose work consisted of mostly manual labor but not much decision making, were more likely to develop senility than those whose work consisted of more mentally strenuous work. there was a nun who at 96 was still translating old text into modern English.

But in my personal experience the brain seems to stop - or at least slow down - somewhere in the mid teens and seems to pick up again somewhere in the mid to late 20's.

By the way, my parents and in-laws are in their 70's (72, 74, 75, 77) and all have their full faculties.

There is a saying in Gujarati language, "shathy and budh-dhy naathi".

But it is just that, it means that at 60, brain runs away or loss of control occurs. This is not to take literally.

There is a method to declare people dead, they determine this with brain wave machine, when the activities in the brain stops the person is considered dead. Usually few reading at few minute interval are taken.

If the person is on a heart lung machine then the machine is disconnected, if three reading show no brain waves(brain activity).
