I'm aware that the body of the vehicle is already on the heave side, but surely there is a way to increase its torque and horsepower. Anyone knows how?

Probably the same way you increase horsepower in all cars, buy one with a bigger engine. Okay, if you can't do that then you can go the tuner route and install high flow intake and exhaust, upgrade the ECU, lighten the underdrive pulley and flywheel (manual trans only), get headers or go extreme and have a turbo installed.

There is a 1.8 litre version of matrix available that somehow settled the underpower problem of the 1.6 version. However, this come with higher tax and consumption.

Alternate is to retune the CPU for more power, improve the air intake system and add additive to your fuel to gain that extra power.......However, this will cause you a rather high one-time expenditure, except for the additive to boost up the performance and higher fuel expenditure.

Suggestion - Scrap the matrix. A mistake made by many due to the attractive pricing a few years back and the shape and not taken in the heavy fuel consumption and underpowered factors. Still a on-going problems with the present Hydundai cars and terrible designs

In Addition to what AJ2003 said, you might also want to try and lighten the car by removing un-needed parts like tools, spare tire, rear seats and replace the hood with light carbon fiber.

Mathematically, if you increase the hp, you have increased the efficiency, so you should be able to get an increase in mpg. At least on paper ....
