On the 4th April I had a tooth out (not one of the front ones but a back biting ones) - it has been extremely painful and swollen for the last week - my cheek and jaw bone were particularly sore as well as the front and back of my gum the whole left side of my mouth. Over the last week it has become less painful, and is slowly getting better - However, once a little of the swelling inside my mouth has gone down I have noticed a something sharp and white what looks like a small piece of tooth or bone coming through the gum above the area the tooth was taken out of (not in the socket - above on the gum). This area is still very sore and the gum around the white thing is very red and inflamed. I know that I should do back to the dentist if I am worried, and I will if it hasn't cleared up in the next few days - but does anyone have any idea what it could be? is this normal after a tooth extraction?

It does happen dont worry, sometimes if a dentist cannot get the whole tooth out because it is too difficult, bits can break off and whatever and lodge there. you have two choices, 1. go back to the dentist and he might even be able to remove it with tweezers, or 2, leave it for the nature or the gum to push it out.. best thing to use after extractions is corsadyl gel, twice a day after brushing your teeth place a blob on your finger and place it on the wound and leave it there. In the morning when you do this leave it for an hour, and in the evening before you go to bed and sleep with it. It helps heal quicker and help towards stopping infections, I found it brilliant when I had my wisdom teeth and I stopped having problems after a few days and it wasnt a easy tooth at all.
Hope all goes well for you
Just dont panic

I am an oral hygeine nut! My dentist will tell you that I go 4 times a year!...Every 3 - 6 months you should get a PROFFESSIONAL dental clean. It removes those dark stains, plaque & tarter you were talking about. The cost is approx $120 Aussie dollars (less if you are private health). Whitening teeth is expensive if a dentist does it (around $1000 plus.) Instead of that, try ionic white. It uses the EXACT same carbonide formula that dentists use BUT is packaged for home use. eBay sells them much cheaper than directly from T.V. I use white glo toothpaste (You can buy it from a supermarket). Cost$5. It also adds in stain removal and leaves your mouth "tingling" with that clean feeling. As a rule of thumb, a person shouldn't exceed 2 minutes in any single brishing time otherwise you are at risk for removing the enamel off your teeth (Then you'll have to get false-teeth). You should brush the inside first before cleaning the outer teeth. Up and down with a slight circular motion. Hope it helps.

I had to have a few teeth removed and a bit of bone, for a few weeks after I was getting bits coming out, some very small and so not so small, you do need to see your dentist as it may work it's way out on it's own or it may not and you could end up with an infection if you don't get it seen to. Good luck.

I'd be straight back to the dentist. Obviously there is something wrong that needs treating. I've never had a tooth taken out but what u r describing doesn't sound right.

Because you have had these symptoms now for over a week it's time to call the dentist because it sounds like this thing is infected. I would recommend getting in touch with them today to let them know what's going on. What you are experiencing now is definitely not normal.

Sounds like a small bit of tooth that got left behind. Your dentist should be able to take care of it for you with no problem. Go see him/her.
