1 Corinthians chapter 1 verses 1-18 answers this question.
I know very well how foolish the message of the cross sounds to those who are on the road to destruction. But we who are being saved recognise this message as the very power of God. As the Scriptures say:
I will destroy human wisdom
and discard their most brilliant ideas.
So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world's most brilliant debaters? God has made them all look foolish and has shown their wisdom to be useless nonsense. Since God in His wisdom saw to it that the world would never find Him through human wisdom, He has used our foolish preaching to save all who believe.

We are not believers in the existence of your fake god BECAUSE we are smart (intelligent).
We have and do read history including the history of religion - ALL religions.
We don't feel any paranormal presence because there is no such presence to be felt.
Have you ever been into a mental institution?
Have you ever seen severely-deluded people?
You are behaving like one and the next sign that you should be locked up is 'voices in the head', telling you to do something stupid.
Religion IS a form of virus of the mentality, a major delusion, usually introduced by the well-meaning at a very impressionable age - as innocent children.
I have just been watching a documentary on the siege of Beslan. Maybe you've never heard of it.
Muslim Chechnyan terrorists took over a school. Long story short, 350 children died. Many more were hospitalised. The survivors and the parents of the dead children are still traumatised.
WHERE WAS YOUR GOD THEN????????
That, of course, is just one example of the destruction and murder and other sad loss of innocent life that is happening all around the world - just see today's news from Iraq - and all for nothing.
Don't even THINK of replying "It is God's will" or some other such drivel. Your god is just as imaginary as all the other gods that have been invented by mankind through history.
If I had to choose, I'd go for Zeus, as this version is a pain in the butt.
religion is seen as true by the common people, as false by the wise and as very convenient for the rulers ... Seneca, a Greel philosopher.

Whether atheists are smart or dumb is irrelevant. Because 'feeling His presence' is absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. It's to do with faith.
For all I know, the warm feeling I get when I see the sun reflected in drops of rain, the laughter of children or the presence of my loved ones may be exactly the same one you experience when you talk of God. It's just I see no reason to attribute it to a deity, yours or anyone elses.
And as for history, well as far as I can tell, there is little in history that demonstrates the presence of God. Stories, prophecies, myths, parables, however much they accord with one's inner sense of 'truth', are not history.
Hope that helps.

I'm reading an interesting piece of "history" now. It's called 2 Kings, otherwise known as 4 Kings. You probably haven't heard of it, it's quite obscure. Which is just as well really, as it's so obviously a rather naive attempt to explain man's inhumanity to man that it's not even funny. Some of the other books in the series are hilarious, but you have to take the crunchy with the smooth. (See, peanut butter really IS the atheists' nightmare, I'm so full of fear I can't help alluding to it).
Anyway, I've set myself a challenge to read through this series, even though I don't usually read much fiction. I figure I'll reward myself with something intellectually stimulating once I'm done. Unless I find God along the way, of course.....BWAaaaahaha hah hah! Oh, that's a good one....

We are not believers because we are smart. If i am smart, then i must trust logic and science and they both do not point to religion, but in fact to the complete opposite.
How do you read history? Do you read history or religious history?
While i subscribe to agnosticism, atheism is very acceptable to me because i do not feel any of "his" presence around me.
I am sure that when one prays you might get this nice, warm fuzzy feeling in your chest, is that god? If it is, then he has a strange way of revealing himself to us.
Have you read all those "amazing" stories in the bible, Torah or the quran? I have to say that they are quite amazing, but have you wondered why all these things have only happened in these stories and no longer occur in our modern times? Where are the giants that we read about in the bible? Where are the talking animals? Where are the individuals that can walk on water, ascend to heaven or raise the dead?
Am i to trust some old book over my own eyes, ears, senses and logic? I don't think so.

I felt his presence last night but he didn't call the next morning and so I decided that I was not going to get a hang up over a one night history read.

I'd be happy to sit down with you and discuss the any of the battles of the Somme. Perhaps we could do it outside, in the sunshine, and feel the presence of my Brother, the Sun.
I'm not an atheist, but I do read history, and I do feel 'His' presence.
Still peddling the same old 'generalising' drivel in a vain attempt to make fundamentalist Christianity look attractive?
It's not working, is it?

There are accounts of a place called Camelot, and a fellow named Robin Hood. Are people also stupid for not believing in that?
As far as feeling "His" presence goes, I don't see how intelligence would factor in to that. If anything, painted in the absolute best light, that would seem like more of an empathic sort of quality, not intelligence.
(Addendum: Rather than considering it empathic, some may consider it more delusional.)

Unfortunately, history can sometimes be inaccurate. I read, reread, and reread. I analyze what I read and determine if the evidence presented before me is accurate or questionable. Hence I come to the conclusion that religion is false. Who's presence am I supposed to feel? Your imagination?

because we've read history and seen what people have done to prove his existence, and still failed miserably. God is nothing more than a myth to keep the good little sheeple in line. Atheists realize that what you call 'God's influence' is nothing more than perseverance and self worth coupled with a little elbow grease. Whatever we accomplish, whether good or bad, we are responsible for.

The bible is not history! I know you think it is, but it really isn't.
Good grief! We're not believers because we can see through the bs in the bible! It says bats are birds, and that snakes talked, and that giants walked the earth and were slain by a rock in a slingshot! There is no God to feel! It's because we're smart that we don't believe. Now get down off your soapbox.
