i walk up and say something like "hi, i'm a grad student and i have my own apartment. i have scented candles and i make a mean pasta dish. would you like to come home with me?"
lol, i am messing around.
sorta.
usually a guy will come out and say it if it's serious enough to mean anything -- but if you're curious, the only REAL way to know is to ask HIM. you can't read his mind! don't try, you'll only confuse yourself!
good luck, i know it's tough to talk to that guy/girl when you are low on experience

i know im not a guy but i would like 2 help u out in this....well i dont think there's a certain way of showin this cz i believe that u guyz make the same mistake all over again... u just follow sm rules like check her out n stuff no matter if u just like her or u fall in love@first sight.... so my advice is 2 just act as u feel b honest simple mr charmin n u'll get her heart.... if no, well it wasnt 4u from the first place:)

there is nothing great in this....but the thing is that you must have the courage to go up to her and tell her that you like her....you can also say that online.....or even on sms,phn,or face to face....but the thing required is guts.......
