This one is easy. In my experience its because from the youngest age we are emotionally dependent on our parents for loving, nurturing and encoragement. Then later on when for whatever reason we turn to say... our friends there is a sort of hole left from where your mother used to be.
Thats why (my theroy) is why you seek a girlfriend with attributes similar to your mother (scary as it may seem) because she was the first person in your life to show you love and people are impressionable.

It give meaning and fulfillment to someone's life... Knowing that someone cares about you, and feeling that you're needed by someone that you hold in such high esteem is the best feeling in the world :)
