My wife and I are moving to Kansas from Nevada in May and have two cats, one male and one female. It is safe for us to give hydrocodone to them to ease their distress during travel? Please provide links to websites if possible.

No. Hydrocodone (Vicodin) is open to misuse in humans (it's a narcotic, an opiate), and so is inappropriate for use in animals.

Opiates are only used for animals in veterinary practice, and there they are a controlled drug that cannot be prescribed to clients. This is due to their potency and potential for misuse.

An analgesic (painkiller) is inappropriate for use to ease distress. Pain killers are for pain, sedatives are for distress. Your vet can prescribe you an appropriate sedative for you animals.

You should, if possible, consult a vet. But the fact that you know he is dying may be causing reluctance to spend any cash. You didn't mention weight, nor breed. Taking into account the fact that dogs eat garbage, and nothing happens, splitting one 5mg/500mg tablet in half would make him happier. If I had to, I'd give that to a 60-70lb. dog. But you should consider that since dogs have a faster metabolism, the effects of the Vicodin won't last too long. And you don't want him to get addicted. So, Vicodin might be too elaborate for a dog when you consider the effects won't last that long. You should call the doctor and see what he suggests.

I would not recommend giving your pet ANY medication that wasn't specifically prescribed for them by a vet. You have to take in to consideration the dosage, difference in how the body processes things, liver and kidney problems, etc. If you're looking for a sedative that doesn't require going to the vet for, go to a pet store and get these tablets that are made for stress and hyper-activity. They're all natural and work like a charm. I got some for my dog to calm him down during thunderstorms (they scare the living daylights out of him, poor thing) and the tablets worked like magic!

NO!! Go to the vet and get some proper tranquilers for your cats. They are not even very expensive as cats usually only need a very small dose. Why risk killing your cats rather than spending money on a medication that is not going to poison them!?

No. Best get some real cat-calming pills from your vet. Hydrocodone is a powerful drug and shouldn't be second-guessed.

NO. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is an ingredient in both Norco and Hydrocodone, as well as Vicodin. Tylenol is DEADLY to animals, because their kidneys can not process it. It takes very little to kill them.

If you wish to calm them down, just put them in a kennel and cover it. It's safer.:)

Due to potential nervous-system effects, hydrocodone is not recommended in cats.
