No offense to the book. I love God, but some of the rules sound very bad, kind of sexist or something.

Yeah, there is some pretty vile stuff going on there. The Gnostic Christians had a pretty interesting explanation for it; the god of the Old Testament, Yahweh, is not the same God of Love in the New Testament.

An interesting book on the subject is called Jehovah Unmasked by Nathaniel Merritt, which does a thorough comparison of the god of the OT vs. the God of the NT.

It is what people these days would call 'sexist'. It could be seen as God revealing Himself as a sexist.

This is the thing: God doesn't think like we do. And to top that off, the current mindset people are framed within is not the way people thought ages ago. So when you read the Old Testament, you are reading about people who did not think the way we do. And yet the Old Testament is still applicable to modern days.

It takes time to understand the way things were back then. You seem patient enough, keep that up, please.

Many of the old testament verses give me cause to pause. I understand them as God's advise to the bronze age. It makes no sense that God who is love and wants nothing more than to have a relationship with us would tell Moses to kill all men, women and children in a village, and then punish the Israelis for not doing so.

How could a God who loves all, do this? My only answer is that he sees long term and saw how idolaters would turn God's people away from having true happiness, a relationship with him.

Do you mean like the law that says that if a man rapes a virgin, and he is caught, that they must be married, and a certain amount of money must be paid to the father for compensation? What's so bad about that? It complements the shrimp laws nicely.
