Is it alright to feed a 1 year old St. Bernard fresh cooked salmon on a regular basis mixed with dry food?

Also how much food should a 1 year old St. Bernard be eating daily?

Well, high quantities of sodium can cause urinary track problems in dogs, such as bladder stones, UTIs, etc. So I wouldn't recommend salmon on a regular basis and if you are going to feed it to him, be sure not to season or salt it whatsoever. Also, don't use any type of oil or butter, the excess fat is not healthy for him and will quickly result in an over-weight dog. Fish, in general, is an excellent source of protein and has types of proteins that are beneficial for brain developement, proteins that aren't found in lamb, cow or chicken which are the common proteins used in dog food. I also would not recommend cans of tuna, again, the high quantities of sodium are not healthy and tuna is not a good source of protein unless it's Albacore tuna; it's a white fish that has beneficial proteins in it. As for how much dog food he's eating... It is all based on his weight. The charts on the dog food, however, are inaccurate; they recommend a larger amount of food than what is the appropriate amount for them to be eating, the idea being you'll run out of food quicker so you'll have to buy more. About 1/2 - 2/3's of what is recommened for your dog's weight is what is appropriate. Lets say they recommend two cups for a dog his size, feed him only a cup, maybe a cup and a half if you can't bare the idea of him only eating a cup of food a day. Watch his weight carefully and if he has a waist or not, if you notice him packing on the pounds quickly, slowly cut back on the amount of food. A type of dog food I'd like to recommend, 9 out of 10 vets recommend it is Hill's Science Diet. It's well balanced and incredibly nutritious. For your dog, I'd recommend the Adult Large Breed formula. Good luck and I hope this info helps!

Dogs are meat eaters so it's alright but on a regular basis is a bit unusual even for a dog that size...As a professional dog trainer and breeder I recommend a good dog food that is made specifically for Large Boned Dogs. Eukanuba or Iams are top notch because they don't have all the corn meal etc. but just efficient amounts of protein that also reduces waste and you don't have to feed them quite as much. One thing if you want to give it a treat and save a lot of money compared to salmon is a few meals a week crack and egg and put it in there or if you open a can of tuna you can drain the juice in there and the dog will go nuts. The egg will also shine the coat some too, but the good dog food will show on the overall health and apperance of the dog.

Yes, its perfectly fine to feed a St.Bernard Salmon. A Dog that big should eat about 3 cups a day with out the salmon, For how young he is. And its fine for him to have it on a regular basis! Any fishes are great for dogs, They love it and and its the best thing for a dog. You can also for a treat cook brown rice up and put salmon on top, That's the best thing for a growing puppy!I hope i helped you out! Good luck

I think your dog is incredibly lucky to be offered good food. I can't see any problem with mixing it in with the dry stuff. As for amount, doesn't the dry food bag have a feeding guide?

It is safe to feed him/her cooked salmon, but make sure that you take out the bones (if there are any).
