or whatever it is called. Sometimes I see dogs that wear a white thing that looks like a lamp head around their head. What's it for? Does it keep them from biting people or what?

Keeps them from biting or scratching -- usually a surgical incision or something medical in nature.

The lamp shade thing is used when an animal has had an operation and the vet doesn't want the dog to pull out its stitches or lick the wound.

When my dog was neutered, he had to wear one for a week, he didn't like it at all.

They place the cones around dogs heads when they get fixed or any other kind of operation they might have had to ensure the animal does not pull the stitches out. For some dogs and other animals it is necessary and for others they will not mess with the area. It all depends on that particular animal.

It's called an elizabethan collar, and it's a medical device. It stops dogs that have had surgery from chewing or licking their wounds, so that they can heal quickly. It's like how some moms made their kids wear oven mitts when they had chicken pox so that the kids wouldn't be able to scratch themselves.

That's a cone. It's because the dog got hurt, like it got cut or is bleeding. They put the cone on them to prevent them from licking it and making it vulnerable of being infected. My Chihuahua Bingo, was always bitten on the legs by his mate, D. One day, she bit him so much, that he got big red splotches of blood caked all over his legs! I had to get him to the vet, and they gave us some medication and put a cone on him. It was already infected because he had been licking it.
That's why they wear a "lamp-head".

It mostly keeps them from biting themselves like if it would have stitches some where like the paw (i've had a dog get stitches in the paw and they put nothing over it) Then they would put the cone on him/her....If a dog had to have something over its mouth b/c it bites then it would be a mussle....

Its designed for when there is an injury or surgery requiring stitches to ensure the dog will not try to pull them out. It stops the dog from licking or messing with the area so it can heal properly.

It is meant to keep the dog from licking itself. Usually when a dog has stitches, or a wound that needs to heal.

Its a collar that restricts the animal from biting themselves, or over cleaning an area that is healing.
