Does a responsible parent protect his children from the results of their mistakes? Or, rather, allow them time & experience in regard to them, from which to learn for themselves that it is very beneficial to be obedient, & always act wisely?
Love must be voluntary. If not, it is nonexistant...
Everyone would be robots, the way you describe it.
There would be no such thing as having 'loved ones'.
Would you really want to live like that?
Besides...
HellFire is a BIG Myth, designed to frighten people into submission to false religions! Notice it's history, in:

If God simply wiped out individuals who rebelled as they 'popped up', it would leave disturbing questions & room for doubt in everyone's minds. The plan he has enacted will have the best possible outcome, as bad things will be a thing of the past, and any cause for doubt that there would have been otherwise, is being removed. The origin of sin is a bit of a mystery, there is no reason for it. All that has been revealed to us is that it began a long time ago in a place far away, with a being who is called in Isaiah 14:12 the morning star or the crescent moon, the son of the dawn - "Lucifer" in some English translations (he later became Satan - the adversary). This being was the chief of the angels and he got proud and tried to stage a military coup in heaven. It failed and he and his rebels were exiled. He came to this planet and was able to persuade our ancestors to join him in rebellion against God.
As for "if God can do anything, why doesn't he get rid of it?" The answer is that he is in the process of getting rid of it. However, he could not stamp on the rebels right away because the evil nature of sin was not that apparent at first to the sinless inhabitants of the universe who had had no prior experience of it and God might have appeared unjust and cruel to them. The enemy had to be given a chance to show his true colours and the universe had to be given the chance to see if Lucifer was right that God was a tyrant or if God was right and Lucifer was wrong.
Also, God not only wants to get rid of sin, but to save sinners, and it takes time. There is an unseen war going on. It is a battle for the hearts and minds of the people of earth, a battle between Satan and God. Satan is trying to turn people against God and God is trying to show people that he is good and loves them. God is very patient and is waiting for everyone to have a chance to know the truth and to make their decision about which side they want to be on in this conflict between God and Satan, between good and evil, love and selfishness.
Although God is more patient than we like, in the end he will put a stop to earth's downward trajectory into sin, there will be a judgment day, and at that time sin and sinners will be destroyed and the universe will be at peace at last.
Read the following chapters from some books written by a 19th century author named Ellen White, they explain all this much better than i can:

God follows His own perfect standards of justice. Which, incidentally, don't include a burning hellfire as a punishment. God told Adam the punishment for sin :"You will positively die. To dust you will return." Adam sinned and the penalty was that he returned to the dust he was formed out of, to the state of non-existence that he had before he was created. The doctrine of an eternal, burning hell was conceived by the pagan Babylonians, popularized by Dante, and disseminated by so-called Christians because it proved to be a powerful motivator to cause others to convert. But it is not a Biblical teaching. And the wages of sin is death, non-existence. Always have been.

He is letting his children see from satans first rebelion what the sin has done to his perfect creation, and now he has given evil an appointed time as our school master and the ones who learn it will enter heaven and the ones that rebell to the end will not, it is his way of weeding out the ones who dont love him.

God gives us free will so we must decide what path we take. God wills us to do good but it is by our weakness and sinfull nature that we go against him. That is why it is important to reject Satan and sin at all costs.

It's all written about. He has His timing. He told about the end of sin. He's got it all taken care of.
So if you are worried about it, then just trust Him to do what He said He would do.

It's part of our gift of free will. It's wonderful, but if we exercise it, we unleash eternal suffering.
